View Full Version : funny way to kill destroyers in shallow water

So i went down to wake island to see what was going on there on my way to my patrol area.

There was a destroyer patrolling around the island, and in the little bay there was a couple of merchants at the docks.

I sunk the merchants and made a run for deeper water when the destroyer was on the far side of the island - but the destroyer was a little faster than expected and made a b-line for me. His first run passed off to my starboard side by quite some distance but he made a hard turn to pass directly over me and try again.

I knew i would be sunk this time around so with him now approaching from directly behind me pinging me i went to back emergency. i figured if he rammed me we would both go down together.

suddenly he goes back emergency too.

OK?

but instead of coming out of back emergency he continues in reverse in a straight line all the way back about a 6 ot 7 boatlenghts before colliding with the dock and sinking quite quickly.

Hmmm i thought, i'll have to try that again.

Later on i was close to shore but still in fairly deep water and a destroyer was right on me approaching from behind again. I went back emergency... and he did too... right into the short line and beached himself causing a few explosions.

guess its another bug, but for now its the poor mans method of shaking a destroyer in shallow water hahaha

Maybe a bug, but:

No Captain will go full-reverse with a destroyer on his tale....

So the AI do crazy things because you do crazy things ;)

I was sneaking out of my first harbour (in the torpedo cheat video), cruising in a Gato 17m @ 1kt. Just enough to stay under the calm water.

One of the destroyers picked me up but I just kept going. I was going so slow he ended up circling me 5 or 6 times. Then he came *right* down the length of my boat and tore open his keel. Sunk about 300 meters in front of me and I had to turn quickly. There was an intense scraping sound and it knocked out my flak gun, as well as causing my sub to rock for 30 seconds. Other than the flak gun being completely knocked out, no damage.

Finished up my patrol and docked. The flak gun was completely damaged but it was usable within seconds if I assigned a repair crew and manned it. As soon as I took the repair crew off and unmanned it, it would become completely damaged again. It was also causing some extra calculations because I could not compress time nearly as far (1024x as opposed to 5600x).

It was an awesome glitch. Ever since then I've been leaving FRAPS running.

i had another strange run in with a destroyer.

the watch crew suddenly says SHIP SPOTTED so there i see a convoy moving by.

no big deal except that the convoy escort closest to me was only about a quarter of a mile away. broad daylight, it came out of time compression to report the contact. the entire convoy just sailed right past me as if i wasnt there. and i was almost too close to even fire torpedos at the closest destroyer - literally like a stones throw away at one point and he just kept going.

Clear weather, daylight with good visibility. nice sunny day - i see no reason they shouldnt have engaged me.

And

of course no captain in his right mind would go full reverse when a destroyer is right on his tail. but im "exploring" the game to see what sort of interesting things i can find with the world and the AI.

for example once in a blue moon the SH3 ships would sometimes fear a collision and try to evade you - even going so far as to go full reverse and break off their depth charge attackes for several minutes if you went full reverse.
