IT would cost me 3000 renown..
I rather just wait to get the IX boat, but if someone could let me know what I would miss out on with getting the VIIC.. I am sure more fuel, but what else?
THANKS
Speed. :yep:
But if I was you buy an IX Boat there sexy.

Not on the surface.

Yes, the upgrade is definitely worth it.
I find the upgrade to VIIC not very worth it. I prefer to pay for better upgrades. Plus theres nothing wrong with a VIIB. Even Silent Otto stuck with his VIIB.
I just think that 3000 renown is a bit steep.

If I were u, I won't do so.
The VIIB is enough for you to do anything, and its assigned patrol grid is much better than a long range U-boat (think about a ten thousand mile patrol with a IXC to Carnabbin)
Save the percious renown for later upgrades such as rader and decoys

Man I made it till 1944 with a VIIB in the 7th. I NEVER traded it for anything else. Only thing I did was upgrade the living hell out of it. I probably sank over 99,000 tons with that boat and out of the 30 or 40 patrols I did I only lost ONE crewman. It was the watch officer who died when a shell from a armed tralwer hit the conning tower. I'd keep that tub you've got if you have any common since.

I'd be tempted to keep my trusty VIIB ;) they're cracking boats, and from reading the specs of the VIIB and VIIC....there's little to no noticeable difference in the specs in the manual.
I'd stick with the VIIB, unless you plan on going for some long range patrols to the East coast of America or the Carribean....hmmmm, wonder if the VIIB could sail that far out from a port in France if your careful with your fuel :hmm:

Everybody has their own thoughts - but I tend to save my renown until I can get a type IX - or I start SH3 Commander new career (1939 second flotilla) and begin with a IX! The VIIb vs VIIc is a real minor difference performance wise. Biggest difference is the conning towers available and the AA guns they mount. Now the VII vs IX - well - the IX dives slower and is less manueverable underwater - but faster, longer ranged and has more eels... Tis why I would say keep the renown until you can get a bigger boat. More eels and more fuel hopefully translate into more ships per patrol moving in with Davy Jones...
Its really a matter of personal choice - just ask yourself - does the upgrade give you a needed capability that you cant get with normal upgrades? If so, or if you just want to spend it - then go ahead. Its your renown - you and your crew earned it.
Just remember - it takes time to change boats - so your going to spend some time in the dock before your next mission if you swap. Either way - Good Hunting Mate!

I like my VIIC - with the turbocharger upgrade. The actual performance exceeded my expectations. It performed better than it read, in other words. But, umm, I am looking forward to a IX.

Just got to the start of '42 and the damned Dockies won't install Radar on my type VIIB.. are there any other upgrades that won't go on her?

That's the main caveat in keeping the VIIB...it's not as 'upgradeable' as the VIIC :nope:
But if you start early enough to get a VIIb then you aren't likely to survive very long I figure. Either die sometime around 41ish or be retired. Though the other thing could be that its an additional challenge.

I'm using a IX right now. I love them. Each one is a different lady and the IX is like that cute girl with some extra meat on her bones. But she doesn't care cause she knows how to get down to business.:rotfl:
