The latest recon mission i am working on has me sneaking into tokyo bay, photographing ships in port there and sneaking out.

I have attempted no less than six (6) times to finish this mission - tonight I am part way through my seventh (7th) friggin attempt.

here is the typical story.

attempt numbers one two and three went like this.

Snuck into the bay at 70 feet depth so as to avoid being spotted by aircraft in shallow waters. Stuck to the deeper areas. got to the port i was assigned to photograph. on several occasions Destroyer Escorts, Sub Chasers, Gun boats, Tankers and freighters came within literally 10 feet of running me over.

Photographed to ships and turned to make my way out of there. One particular area is only about 60 feet deep so you have no choice but to use periscope depth for short distance as you run from deep spot to deep spot in the bay.

on the first attempt i made it out of the bay and was somehow spotted at nearly 200 feet deep, at one knot and silent running and depth chargerd relentlessly - accurately - lethally until my boat fell to over 1100 feet of water. que cheesey death scene.

the remaining attempts went the same way with one small difference - each time i neared the exit of the bay and thought for sure "This will be the time i escape!" a sub chaser about 4 miles away moving in almost the complete opposite direction came about almost 180 degrees and pointed right at me - he increased to flank speed and zoomed quite rapidly to my exact position. meanwhile im in about 100 feet of water level at about 80 - 90 feet silent running and one knot. and with hardly so much as 3 or 4 pings he splashes down 8 to 10 DCs right on me... within seconds i am dead.

What am i doing wrong here? I just dont get it. on more than one occasion these DEs and Sub chasers from miles away just made an about face as if someone told them where i was - turned completely around and hauled tail right to the exact spot in the ocean i was and DCd me into oblivion.

this time im trying a new tactic.

1. Im going to only move at night, if it is day time im just going to sit on the bottom and wait for sunset to move into the target area.

2. When it comes time to take a picture i will do so at dawn (done)

3. when i turn tail to exit the bay im going to go to deep water and sit on the bottom until night. Then and only then will i move to the next segment of deep water.

4. I will jump from deep area to deep area only moving at night - i dont care if it takes me 10 weeks to get out of tokyo bay - im going to make it through this.

- SOMETHING is giving me away to the destroyers - i dont know what, but somehow they go from being a speck on the horizon to full speed ahead right onto my face regardless of what i try to do to evade them.

any ideas?

at night on the surface moonless and crawling scraping the port diveplanes against the shore.

Ok maybe scraping the diveplanes was a bit to execessive

how about 800 - 1200 yds off shore.
like in RW.

Incedently I have developed an auto evasion
patterns for SH3 Ill look at making one for
SH4 in a bit.
