View Full Version : Is the radio pretty much useless ?

The radio which tunes to Washington. Once in a long while it will play the news but 99.9% of the rest of the campaign you change stations and hit play and it does nothing even when scanning from one end of the frequency spectrum to the other - NOTHING

can someone tell me the point of this waste of space?

See the mod forum. There are quite a few mods for the radio already that add stations. You are correct though, default SH4 does not use the radio much at all.

Sorry, I have to disagree. The radio and the possibilities it presents for adding to the immersion I think are among the more exciting developments in SHIV.

OK perhaps the devs could have made more of it, but people like Tedhealey have already done wondrous things with it: different radio stations with different frequencies and ranges, carrying news and music of the time.

God this is my point exactly ever since this game came out!!!!

mods are great - i mean i can take a ford pinto and make it run an 8 second quarter mile for crying out loud

these companies release a crap product so the moders can make it an awesome game and it will go down in history as such.

its BS. i know the game will become awesome as more and more mods are released - but for the price the damned thing should have been awesome 2 weeks ago!!! i mean right?!?

i mean there are what ? almost 140 bugs in this thing?

Please.

[total pooch screw.....**.............fair..................... awesome!]

if that were the scale the stars represent where SH4 falls IMHO

The radio is about the ONLY thing I have notice that DOES work right (with modder complied stations that is). SH3 my grammaphone used to skip songs A LOT...dont have that with the radio in SH4.

I agree with you Mr Von Maneuffel, I just want to get the dam thing to work, oh and the gramaphone too, hope the link below has som advise as to how to do this.

The gramaphone was intentionally left empty in SH3 as well. Cleverly setup for gamers to install their own music, and have it sound all scratchy and authentic.

It's a great game feature.

The radio is absolutely genius. Allowing players to set up whatever they want to hear, at whatever programmable station they want to hear it on. And it works great.

This is one of 6 threads I see started by you, that all do nothing but rag on the devs and fill this forum with negativity. And it's not just negative, but it's nastily worded as well.

I would look at your quote above, and apply it to all of your own threads. What is the point of these wastes of space?

Agreed. The folders are there, they are for us to use.

Rivet, no need to get all snotty about it. Stuff like the music and radio files were meant for us to add in the beginning, mate. If Ubi adds it, all kinds of fun copyright law springs into action.

not trying to be snotty.

nor am i referring to the gramophone - oddly enough it never made any of my music sound old or scratchy - but at any rate, im just curious about the purpose of the radio... not the gramophone... the radio that seems to tune into "washington" static. what is it's purpose?

intercept enemy SSS... SOS?

Intercept Tokyo Rose transmissions?

i played a full lenght mission that must have lasted a couple of months in the game and had that thing scanning for music, enemy transmissions, but only seemed to receive static.

is it just a secondary gramophone?

now that 6 miller lites have made their way through the system my post surely must sound less confrontational - er... snotty i mean... :D

I personally feel like recording my own radio programs... maybe make a program like "Midway's Midnight Theatre" and create some ridiculous and cheesy radio plays.

GoldenRivet

that would be cool.

so in its default condition there is nothing to it? players have to add stuff on their own?

Ah, sorry, I meant that the radio also has a folder that allows players to add the radio files. When I spoke with the devs in San Francisco last Jan, I asked about Tokyo Rose broadcasts, among others. They said it would be simpler for everyone if they set the game up for this, but let the players add it. :)

I can understand that from the whole mod community perspective. I have heavily modded sh3 from day one.

but there are probably players out there who view that as "lets get something basic on the shelves and the players can turn it into something really great" personally i would have expected to pay substantially less money for that kind of product. but enough of that - i got the radio mod and im much happier with it now that i have that - before the mod the radio was just kinda there, whoever did it did a good job (just seems like that sort of thing should have been included stock)

GoldenRivet, since you were kind enough to PM me with positive words, I'll return the favor by making my response in public.

I apologize for the bit of attitude in my post above. And I do understand some confusion in regards to "why does the gramaphone not have any music, or the radio not have any other stations".

The posture of my response was not generated by the question itself, but the way it's presented.

I couldn't imagine being on the dev team, and every day having to come here, and instead of reading questions worded like "I'm curious, why was this done this way?, they say "What the hell is wrong with you guys".

Both the radio and gramaphone are excellent game features. The radio especially. You can put your own listening content into the game, and program it to whatever station number you want, and it can even be made to realistically function geographically, where stations can only be heard as you approach certain map areas.

I think it's absolutely genius.

And while it's natural to think "why isn't it already pre-filled with content though", I don't think that's a question that somehow belittles the features themselves. Neal's right that there are copyright issues with filling it with authentic WW2 materials, and no doubt the team wasn't given enough time to come up with other content either.

I also think there's an understanding in this particular community, that the devs can provide such a tool like the radio, make sure it functions properly, then turn it over to this community and let the modders turn it into it's next level. Which they have certainly done already. There's some great radio content mods already sitting on my harddrive.

So, in summary, again, thanks for responding to me in the manner you did, and again I apologize for my angst. I just hate when gamers cannot see or appreciate what they have been given, and can only find negatives instead.

Cheers, and good hunting!

I love the radio! I put all my music in there and very much like the news are played when it happens. Its new in SH4 and therefor has all the feature (fade in and fade out. It also continues to play when you close the mini window) great job!

Indeed.

I notice the gramaphone is the same way, you can close it off the screen and it will still play. In SH3, we didn't even have that gramaphone image that came up, did we?

The radio and Captain Midnight's CBS mod have made me a fan of "The Great Gildersleeve" and am now searching out as many episodes of that show as I can find.

My grandfather would be proud. :smug:

Just trying to get my 'Wake radio' to work properly now - and get the content arranged.

Mookie... you find any good links for The Great Gildersleeve"... would you PM me them?

I grew up in Germany listening to AFN (Armed Forces Radio Network) and the Great Gildersleeve was one of my Favorite Radio programs!

The CBS mod took me back to my youth when I heard Mr. Gildersleeve speak the first time
