View Full Version : Calling off an attack

Last night I had to call off two attacks due to weather. It must have been monsoons or something. Large waves, spray and broaching the surface. Anyone else give up the hunt due to weather in SH4? I did not have to in SH3. I have decided extremely bad weather and the targets are also struggling I call it off.

What say you?

Have not across bad weather yet, what is it like compared to SH3, any issues
with lag:hmm:

Edit: In SH3 the weather certainly gave the game a realistic feel, as frustrating as it was and is at times.

I've definitly done this. Usually because I can't get enough of an unobstructed view through the scope to build a decent solution.

Many times I have given up on pursuit in SH3 due to limited visibility.

By the time I got a visual on the target we were too close for the pistols to arm. I just gave up out of frustration.

I havent run into it in SH4 yet but only have a few hours on the new game yet.

Exactly!!! Just 16 foot swells is not condusive to good calculations.

I find it a lot rougher than SH3. I have seen weather that swamped vessels in SH3 but I see it a bit more ofter in SH4. I had watched a struggling destroyer go down. It looked like the movie about the mutiny on the Kane and the really bad weather scene.

As far as lag, yes, there is some lag and it is just not good deal with weather/lag to waste torpedoes. As fare as realism, the weather modelled well and I do not get 3 weeks of fog and ran. Maybe 3 days. What is cool is the weather does not go from one extreme to the other. The huge swells quietly calm down over a period of hours. I really like the weather model in the game. Other than that, I radio in the location and move on to quieter hunting grounds.

Look forward to it, going to fire it up later tonight:yep:

Normally I would agree. I love the weather modeling for the most part, and it seems to be very well modeled. I have seen ships with damage high above the waterline ship water through the holes, list, and then sink. I have also had to go deep and give up because of the weather. The water effects on the scope, which are fantastic, make it much more difficult to take bearings or range measurements in rough weather. Last night, however, I was in a terrible storm with rain, fog, high seas. At least that is how it looked through the periscope. Deciding to take advantage of the weather I surfaced. Once on the surface I went to the bridge only to find myself in CAVU conditions without so much as a cloud in sight. (Which made for a quick crash dive as shells started to explode around me.) It is the only time that I have seen something like that. Generally the weather is awesome.

Maybe an expert could answer this but wouldn't a sub have a way to tell the surface conditions? Hearing thunder? Hearing crashing waves and driving rain from below the surface?

I know I've seen this in movies but is that realistic for a WWII sub?

They would look through the scope. As I recall-and I do this in game-SOP is to do a scope scan before going to the surface. You could get a general idea of the weather by looking.

In one book i've read the sub was on the Atlantic and the crew "felt" the influence
from the thunderstorm way down to 60 meters.

Oh yeah, always pop the scope up and do a sweep. Nothing worse than a destroyer in your baffles that the good old sonarman can not hear:o. Check the weather also....as stated SOP..standard operating proceedures.:yep:

it wasnt uncommon for storms or heavy swell to make attack runs prohibitly difficult. You'd have to run the fish shallow to prevent it from going under the ship, broaching fish would be deflected by waves and run off course.

I learned that lesson to on my last patrol. I came across a large convoy but bad weather detered good sightings and firing solutions. I fired six torp spread at the lead ship. I hit somthing and heard it sinking while diving to clear the area. Read about it in my recent patrol report (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=484447&posted=1#post484447)

I never give up a hunt, one time I was looking for a ship contact I had received. I arrived at the spot that estimated it would be but my watch crew didn't report any contacts. "Impossible" I thought to myself, "I'll find it myself" I go onto the bridge to be greeted by white fog. You couldn't see more than 30 ft ahead and there's a ship passing 15 meters ahead! I almost crashed into him ;)
