Low fuel...any workaround?

Doh! I managed to run out of fuel just short of a friendly port. Is there any way I can temporarily work around this so I can recover the patrol?

You're screwed (happened to me on my first patrol), but I was far away from any ports. You COULD submerge and use batteries at 1/3 speed, then surface and sit there a long time, and repeat. (Batteries recharge on their own even when stopped and surfaced, though very slowly).

Of course, depending on how far away you really are from a port, this may or may not be a viable option.

I would've planned ahead...see my "working up to full realism" thread to see how I calculated how long it'd take for a patrol around the pacific.

Basically I figured:

166nm = 2% fuel consumption at 1/3 speed surfaced. (about 7-9 knots)

Then you can figure out how much fuel you'd need to get to anywhere, thankfull there are enough friendly ports around to refuel when you get low on the diesel. But the ruler and that basic math is pretty essential if you want to know how much you'll need to get to where you want to go. Other people will say it isn't...but it's a good thing to do. (plan before you head out anywhere.)

Don't forget that rough weather will lower fuel effciency, also.:)

and damage is a killer. you can get to japan from midway on less than 25% but if you take enough damage in my case i had 6x% fuel left and didnt make it back. and irl if your boat ran out of fuel im sure you could radio in and get some help? i assume they didnt say hah you f'ed up sit and bake in the sun
