View Full Version : Getting back on those mean destroyers...

On my last patrol I spotted a Town-class DD about 4km away from my boat. Since I had just promoted my deck gun crew I decided to give it a shot (pun intended) and let them fire away on the destroyer which was closing in on me. To my big surprise the very first shot landed directly on the Town's turret and caused a massive explosion. Soon afterwards the ship's bow slipped under the waves, there were some secondary explosions and the whole DD dissapeared. If only it was that simple all the time...
I was playing GWX with 80% realism by the way.
Guess this tactic is no use against the more modern and heavily armed subhunters...
What kind of successes did you guys have against escorts with the deckgun?

Welcome to Subsim Mate:up:
Enjoy your stay.
Welcome aboard!
Don't expect me to even dream of engaging DD with deck gun.

Last week i got 2 destroyers in a campaignmission with the gun.
It was also from great distance.
But i prefer to wait till the destroyer get straight right to you. When it
is about 600m away from you i use a T1 torp on fast mode and 5m depth.
Till now i am very succesfully.

"Use the force Kaluen!" lol thats a very lucky shot, normally unless I'm close and have a good firing solution on it I just go silent and pretend to be a quiet hole in the ocean.

I experimented a little bit and managed to sink another Town destroyer but needed a lot more shots this time. The third try ended in desaster because this time the destroyer got in a lucky shot of his own killing my entire deck crew and then rammed met to death... well I guess it's back to diving down and running silent, especially since almost everything I encounter these days are those pesky little black swan frigates...

The deck gun in GWX tends to have that pyro effect. I often inflict fatal secondary explosions with a 'lucky' round. Normally I can sink a ship with 4 or 5 rounds. With destroyers it's often less. For example, i was attacked by a corvette that was on the convoy flank (spotted me coming up around the side). He charged me and I ran, firing back with my deck gun at a long range. I was lucky to hit him, but the shot that landed blew up the bridge and set of other secondary explosions. He was massively ablaze all down the hull, and turned and fled.

There are old Kaleuns and there are bold Kaleuns but there are no old bold Kaleuns :smug:

(of course he was a coward who ended up dying like everyone else.. Probably not a good role model) :nope:

Get stuck in death is glory. Go out fighting and bare your buttocks to the enemy.

AMEN!!
Welcome to subsim. That sounds like a lucky shot. Were you manning the gun or did you leave it to the crew? Mine almost always fire a couple wide of the mark before getting their eye in.
