Periscope depth stability - SHIII vs SHIV

Question for the experts here: In SHIII I've noticed that while at periscope depth in rough seas the boat will pitch up and down whereas in SHIV in similar conditions the boat is pretty stable. In SHIV I can use the stadimeter with relative ease at periscope depth in rough seas but in SHIII it's almost impossible. Were U-boats really that susceptible to wave action at periscope depth while their US counterparts weren't?

I don't consider myself an expert on buoyancy :nope: but in RL it took a very highly skilled person to maintain a steady depth in normal weather conditions never mind those that were rough :yep: :arrgh!:

From personal experience of many hours at periscope depth -- SH3's motions in waves are realistic, SH4's are not. :-?

Ahhh so you really can feel the motion of the waves at periscope depth.

In SH3 theres an option in the settings where if its off then the boat will pitch up/down with it on it will always be steady in rough seas at persicope depth. Maybe in SHIV its the same settings & you have it turned on?

In Sh4 you get waves splashing the scope, but no the boat doesnt really pitch up and down. An undamaged boat maintains depth perfectly. But Im not entirely sure what causes that. It has something to do with the enviormental variables, and probably the displacement of the subs. The wave attun settings in the sim.cfg are MUCH lower in SH4. (in scale, but lower) If you adjust them to Sh3 stock settings, you can't keep your boat on the surface at all, it just wallows beneath the waves, and wont surface.

edit: where you REALLY feel the unstableness is on the surface, particuarlly when using the TBT. (aka uzo in uboat terms)
