There are not and I believe never were. Silent Service.....no talking and no telling when the sub is scheduled to leave.

The movies are wrong.

Most WWII sailors weren't married. Those that were didn't have their families in Hawaii very often. Those that did couldn't get them onto the SubBase and REALLY couldn't get them down to the piers. There was dangerous work going on. SubBase Pearl is very small.

A sub coming in from patrol got a visit from the commodore, or SubPac if it was an excellent patrol. The crew got mail, fresh fruit and ice cream, then a bus to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. The officers met with the relief crew, went over the work package with the base, and took cabs to the Hotel.

That is the way I have read it Snowman. Hence the SILENT SERVICE. WW2 movies not withstanding:roll:

LOL.

If that is the kind of thing that will decide it for you, SH4 isn't going to be for you :)

There were women on the pier in Aces Of the Deep...but not in Silent Hunter the first either.

Funny thing that.

You telling me that the movie Destination Tokyo staring Cary Grant was not realistic?

Nice spacious submarine
Everyone wearing a pressed uniform despite being weeks into the mission
Everyone clean and never sweating
Kindly Allan Hale dispensing old home advice to the young crewmen

Following a crusier just under its propeller into the harbour
Shooting four torpedoes at a carrier underway and then diving under the carrier to launch a stern torpedo, this while the carrier is at 20-30 Knots launching airplanes.

Returning all the way to San Francisco (thats a long trip!) without stopping off for fuel.

You telling me that aint true??

I am shocked :p

ps, it is one of my favourite Sub movies despite being slightly hollywood ;)

Ensigns should not marry.
Lieutenants may marry.
Lt. Commanders should marry.
Commanders must marry.
