View Full Version : Things that were done right!

Ok, we have spent our time cutting the game to shreds. Now it is time to mention the things that are right. I would like to start with the following:
Weather looks to done right. I do not have endless weeks of rain:up:
Dynamic campaigns. No repeats for me and affects of Manila being taken by Japan has moved me to another base. Good stuff!
Water is very realistic to me. Well done and it even looks like swells in rough weather.
****Please add what you believe is done right. No negative MOJO here please****

- Ship models look fantastic.
- Ship destruction sequences - flying debris, the rippling wave of destruction throughout the ship - are truly cinematic.
- Waves.
- Lighting effects. Sunlight on the water, moonlight on the water. Flames from sinking ships reflecting off the wave tops at night - magic!
- Moonbeams!
- Load times on my machine are a fraction what they were in SHIII.
- New mission types beyond simple patrols.
- Interesting radio traffic.
- I like the little typewriter effect for mission intros.
- Damage - the big ol' holes, broken propeller shafts, etc.
- Linked systems for the damage model
Many great advances over SHIII with SHIV.
LOL. Ok.
The radio implementation looks good (the audible radio as opposed to the message log).
I think anything else I'd mention has been covered already.

I'm really loving the start out of harbor button .One of my major
Dislikes in ShIII was trying to get out of harbor at TC.
Absolutely the dynamic campaign and the feeling that comes with it. To me it really feels as if I am in the thick of things, very well done. I surely dig the graphical improvements too, the added details such as lifeboats, the great looking explosions and ship interiors etc .. but since I am all about gameplay first, no other improvement beats the dynamic campaign for me.

Agree , while I have been pointing out were the game lacks, I do agree it can be built on and it can become great.
Q? on the weather, I hear thunder but I don't see lighting or see lighting flashes behind the clouds. Is that down to me not having a good enough card (GF6600GT) or because I don't have the environment box ticked.
And while ammo bunker torp hit look really good the explosions and somke, I guess it would take an engine like the Crytek one to cause the damage an explosion like that would make. Sub school is the only place I use the outside camera, but after a ammo hit on the Cruiser in Sub school and the massive explosion, when it clears everything is still intact, even the flag is still bright and clean.
Yes SH4 has a lot going for it , but it needs a lot of work.
Apart from the big ones that need fixed, I'd like a DC report on parts that can not be 100% fixed and would need a return to port. Need to fix DC and give damage times and a faults report. The only ones that give you a report on a time fix and damage% is when you put your cursor over the AA gun and Deck gun headings on page1 the crew page, in page 2 it only give a number when you hold you mouse of the red bar on the left hand side of the damaged part = 0.051.
The raw ingredience is there , need some very good tuning.

I played the battle of samar last night and although not historically accurate after I sank 2 battlships I just sat back and watched the fighting, it was pretty cool. Also I like the fact that if a carrier is alerted to your presence it will send out planes to hunt for you.

Yes that is a very nice function that I wish SH3 had. The harbours look great but once you have seen them it gets a bit boring

-water run-off effect on the periscope lense, best I've ever seen in any sub game.
-I love watching the diveplanes deploy and retract.. sometimes its the little things.
-crew management is my favorite so far
-at least a dozen other things that I will recall next time I start up SH4 (which will be in 5 minutes)

I like the sub skins a LOT.
This is an interesting one. The subs skins are not bad. Maybe some more gray in them? I do like the skins though.
Map detail on shorelines is very nice. Map in general is nice.
No map update works well also....do not see convoys 500NM off.
Ship variety is very nice
Interface..not bad once you get a handle on it.
Crew changing watch and actually seeing different person is really great!:yep:
PK is a great device...needs a repair but that is coming:yep:
I have to say it again...weather model is excellent. One of the biggest headaches in SH3 is now repaired and awesome.

- Crew Managment is now...Managable! and with great success.
- Water effects are the best in a game to date.
- Putting a hole through the Yamato or a Kongo BB will NEVER get old :arrgh!:
- Weather Effects:sunny:
- Starting out of port is a great idea.
- Seeing allied Ships take part in the combat is a great way to feel more immersed. Plus it kills time in the best way possible while you wait for the torp reloads.

@Badaboom
Water action is very well done and water over the sub is done well also. Need a small fix on the sub coming out of water....no biggie really. But, yeah, the water behavior is excellent.:yep:
Nice pic bro!
THings I like:
Sailing on a clear night with a full moon.
Ordering general quarters.
The new watch system for the crew.
The weather seems a lot better to me. Currently sailing around in blustery clear weather. It also seems as if it may be tied to season or locale a bit more but that might be my imagination.
The new mission structure. Having to drop off supplies, pick up pilots and so on is great. I just wish we could be tasked with saving a bunch of nurses from the clutches of the evil Japanese Empire....Devs take note!
Regardless on what I might have said on the matter, aircraft in general seem to have been reworked slightly for the better.
Damage system is much better and will be a winner once the mods have jollied it up a little.

Oh, man. a big one is EE. I like the clear water but the haze has to go as it is a FPS killer.
Fog modeled when it rains is also very good. I lost a freighter in the soup:cry: . Hunt it down with sonar:smug:
Manning the battle stations is also cool and the having them stand down when the action is over.

+1
-Haven't seen the broken prop shafts, although I have scored a number of stern shots.
-The seafloor is very nice, with all the rocks and plants.
-The explosions are very detailed, as well as the smoke.
-Ship winches, rigging, and men are also detailed.
-I also like hearing the ship alarm on escorts.
-The "tension" music is nice, as well as the "hunter" music.
-I like the large stopwatch.
-E-7's and above getting "automatic" promotions.
-The more detailed crewman attributes.

Lots I agree with here.
But my three faves got to be
1) the ships. Man, they are belles! I enjoy them so much.
2) The water. I thought SH3 had the bestest water ever for a naval game. But SHIV outdid it
3) the weather simulation and atmospheric effects.
Love the water, tho i have switched off enviromental now to get some fps back (7600GS card), so now I am missing how the water is transparent:cry:
Like the crew management, dont understand it, but at least now i dont have to care:D
On easy mode, tho I love how I can one shot a destroyer
Love the TC that goes right up there
The graphics (when u dont have the fps loop of death) are the best I have seen (including GWX)
The pilots that parachute out of the plane that you shot down, bobbing about in the water - nice touch
The animation of the crew is better than sh3
Random missions and radio traffic, tho sometimes a bit annoying to drop out of TC for a message that is irrelevant to you
Overall its got massive potential...hust hope they fix the graphical glitches so I can enjoy it more than I can now and the gamplay for when I go more pro;)

Three cheers on that Sober!!!
Maybe Neal can get this list to the developers. After all the moaning on other things perhaps they need a "pick me"!!!!
One more thing I like is the realistic repair times. It took me three hours on one patrol to repair and even then I still had to head in for refit. There is a bug or two in repairs but overall it is good.:yep:

The AA gunner on (easy setting atleast) does a bang up job shooting down aircraft. I had manned the AA gun myself for half of my first patrol and wounded a few planes then got low on ammo so decided to see if the AI gunner was any good. Came to find out he was very reliable and got 2 zero's before the 3rd dive bombed me perfectly, sinking my boat :x

I noticed something that is a nice touch, under windy, heavy sea conditions, you can see the wind run the top of the water making white water. Next time you have some windy weather check it out.
I forgot the green alge in the water. As you go forward if comes at the scope and when the scope is 180 degrees you see it going away from the scope....nice touch.
As we can see, if we stop to take it all in, there are a lot of nice things going on:yep:

I like the sound of incoming gunfire. The changing watch whistle, battlestations horn and the like are very cool. The ships and the sea are very good looking. Did anyone mention the increased time compression? I love the watch system. Ummm...I enjoy the holes being blown in ships and the increased amounts of radio traffic. Speaking of traffic, it's nice to see you are not fighting the war alone. I ran across my first friendly aircraft carrier battle group today. The little movies in-between patrols are pretty nifty.

My favourites after just two days of playing:
1) Campaign: typewriter intro's, intro movies, special missions, radio news updates... this is simply excellent. This is like RedBaron2 with submarines :)
2) Crew animations/graphics. Crew now have many different faces and clothing, and when you are repairing damage you will see crewmen working with wrenches in the command room. I do miss being able to give orders by clicking on officers though...
3) Water and sky rendering is superb. Makes my pc upgrade worth it :)
4) The post-processing filter setting. Some people may not like it but I think it is great. It really gives the game the right mood for me.

I forgot this also, when leaving port the seagulls actually fly around my conning tower like I was a fishing boat. They seem to circle the sub.
Another is crew on the decks of the vessels. I had one stop after sending a torpedo that missed. As I watched with my binoculars three sailors walked to the side looking at the black thing low in the water about 1500 feet off. My next torp did not miss:smug:. Sailors on deck is very cool.

I like the briefings, it really adds something to the feeling of there being more out there. However, I think they could use a bit of improvement. I recently got one reporting the Battle of Midway. It reports that "one of our carriers" was damaged. Having a small detail like the name of the ship would have been nice.
Also, not learning about the Battle of Midway a month in advance would have been better.

One nice improvement which I have noticed is the appearance of ships on the horizon.
In Sh3, ships were either invisisible or a small black shape would appear which would eventually grow into a ship as you got closer, effective, but a bit jarring.
In SH4, it is much improved. First, you will notice lights blinking on the horizon, which I presume are to simulate signal lamps. Then, the ships will gradually form, swithching from a light blue, nearly indistinguishable from the horizon to a darker blue and then to the actual ship. This is much closer to RL.

In a downpour at night (strangly the seas were fairly calm) I torpedo a tanker. Stalked it, lost it, then tracked it for a bit. Went to the deckgun and started shooting at it. The tanker snapped on its spotlights and started returning fire. Was a great effect, scared the crap out of as I had not seen a merchant type flip on its searchlights before. My first thought was, where the hell did that DD come from!?

You know, like the signal lights, there are things that occur to me when playing the game but I tend to "forget" them once I'm out.
The E-7 chief character on the lookout deck really does look authentic. The guy looks like a total dirtbag, but 1944 salty. It's just once of those things that immediately struck me -- yeah, that's pretty realistic.
"Hey, chief. Anyone ever tell you that you look like a real dirtbag?"

Another thing I noticed. As I was sitting on the bottom of shallow water and getting POUNDED by a DD I watched my men in the control room be thrown back and forth, back and forth. Uber cool. They didn't look like they were enjoying it, either.
Good attention to detail, that. Something other than the magnetically glued feet and internal gyroscopic gimbals the control room crew of SH3 has, no matter how the sub shakes and shimmies.

I like the periscopes how its a dark background with pullout tools when u need them. You dont get that "looking at" feeling as in SH3, its now "looking through" the periscope.
What most have said - detail detail and detail! Beautiful game to just load up and view. On a calm day at persicope depth looking above the water in external camera viewing your sub cruise along is amazing i can never get sick of that effect, I can see my submarine under the water from above!. This would of been an awesome effect for Kapitans in the Mediterrainean in SH3. During WW2 in some med areas aircaft could spot uboats from the air at 60feet submerged.

My likes have all been mentioned, but my favorites include:
1. This is the Pacific theater, and it's done very nicely. I'm a Pacific War nut. In fact, I'm one of the insane people who play Matrix Games' "War in the Pacific," and I'm having great fun seeing the war from another perspective.
2. As everyone has said, the game just looks terrific. I have never taken more screenshots in any computer game, ever.
3. I love the way swells look in the periscope. It just feels real.
4. For whatever reason, I find this new manual targeting system more manageable than was the case in SH3.
5. As everyone says, the new crew rotation system is a huge improvement.
6. As is the dynamic campaign. I really feel I'm part of a larger war. In my second patrol, I was low on fuel, returning to Soerabaja, when suddenly I learned that I had to make for Perth instead. A very fun moment. Barely made it, incidentally.
7. Sanpans look cool in a periscope. So do junks.
8. One question, though: people mention hearing the radio. I've never heard it -- I only see the written reports on the clipboard. Can I actually hear radio? How do I do this? Or are y'all just referring to the in-game music?

Somebody already mentioned the enemy crew on deck. They actually walk around and "do" stuff!
I shot up a fishing boat with the AA gun (I know, I'm evil) :arrgh!:
and the crew actually went down when they got hit!!!:rock::rock:
There are so many great little things. It's always much easier to notice the bad things.
The choice to start your mission in or out of port, for example. It's a no-brianer to have included it - but such a nice little touch.

The Ultimate Sound Mod is well done, as well as the mod that keeps Silent Running and Battle Stations in all screens.
Looking forward to 1.2 as well:up:

After 1.2 I hope my CTDs stop so I can play again. I do love this game. Hmm, well - I think everyone loves the career/dynamic campaign element. You really can't have a subsim (or any good game) without something along these lines. But the details are impressive. I haven't seen my crew during a DC attack but I just happened to flip through the control room last night when we heard a torpedo impact. The guys on the plane controls reached up and shook their fists, everyone was cheering! You just know they were thinking this was payback for Pearl. It wasn't "yay, go us" cheering, the sort of vibe I get from SHIII/GWX, but "that'll show the bastards!" vengence.
There are alot of details along these lines that makes this game so immersive. I miss the interactive crewmen and controls, hopefully someone will figure out how to enable them, but there's more than enough good stuff to make up for it. The visuals are fantastic. Once the bugs/CTDs are cleaned up I'm going to start installing, and figuring out how to work, all those great radio station mods I'm reading about too.
I played the battle of samar last night and although not historically accurate after I sank 2 battlships I just sat back and watched the fighting, it was pretty cool. Also I like the fact that if a carrier is alerted to your presence it will send out planes to hunt for you.
ive surfaced next to a carrier and it never did that.. me think's your fibbing :p
Anyone saddled up next to a coral reef in shallow water near the small islands? They look and act totally real. The detail that went into water, reefs and the ship models is spectacular. I couldn't have asked for better. The ship modeling simply has not been done better in any game.
