View Full Version : Hit by shell, destroyed by secondary explosion?

I was somewhere in the Carribean when I spotted a medium tanker. It was moving fast, and it going to be hard to flank it and get into firing position without being seen. Since it was a clear day, I decided to chase it down and destroy it with my deck gun. As I approached, the tanker opened up on me with a rear gun. As usual, the shots were all over the place and I wasn't worried. But he was moving fast, and I was gaining slowly, so he got a _lot_ of shots in. Finally, one hit. With a terrible surprise, there was a BAM, fire on my screen and the sound of men screaming in pain. A shell had hit the conning tower. As the fire left my screen I had that sinking feeling - when you've taken a foolish risk and been burned. I switched to F7 to check the damage. Watch tower crew was dead. Wait - what's that - suddenly the control room team is dead. A second later, the crew in the radio room and crew quarters are dead. My boat is lost! I don't know exactly what happened, but I suspect that the shell hit the tower, killed those crew, then caused a secondary explosion much like you often see when you shell enemy ships. The secondary explosion killed the control room crew, and then spread through the boat to each end like a rolling fireball. Burn. I didn't know that enemy shells could cause your boat to brew up like that. In the future I'm going to be _way_ more careful around enemy guns.

no, this is a known bug.
When your conning tower is destroyed and the watch crew is dead, SHIII tries to man it automatically, just how it is done when U surface the boat. And because there is no conning tower, they all die by an automatic try to man it
hope it helps

Don't mess around with armed merchants, it's not a glorious way to loose your sub..:D

ARg - a bug. I had this image of fire belching down the conning tower and into the control room...igniting fuel stores and blasting down the compartments. It was a hideous and glorious image. From the surface, a little flash, then a burst of flame cracking the boat in half and then it surges down into a pool of fire. I've now replaced that with the image of men running up the conning tower and suddenly dying..one after another...until there are no more. I hate to admit it, but I think you're right - i remember now that my death message was 'not enough crew to man the boat'. Arg.:nope:

you could always pretend it was the first version :)

I suppose if you dont have anyone in any crew compartments when you decide to run down an armed tanker ie - they are all assigned to repair detail or in engine/ torpedo rooms they wont go clammering upthe ladder to auto death.
