AFAIK, you can only take pictures of ships. So, check your briefing if it states what you must photograph. The process itself is simple, just lock in to the ship you have to photograph and take the pic.

How do you take the picture? With which key?

Click periscope command button, lock a target and the camera button will
be highlighted. Just click it and mission completed.

The camera is the rightmost button at the bottom left on the periscope screen. And you might have to take pictures of more than one ship. The actual number seems to vary (especially in California.)

Just to add what others have said there are certain ship targets configured into the mission. When you have the scope locked onto any of these targets, the camera icon will enable and you click it. Just keep locking up targets and clicking intil you get mission credit. You do NOT have to cruise over a mission icon on the map to accomplish a mission, You just have to be in range of the mission objectives near that place. The mission location icons on the map are not rollovers or pickups like you get in FPS games, They are simply a guide to show you the AREA where the objectives are.

So you can only take photos of the assigned ships, not just any ship in the target area, is that correct? I'm asking because I had a recon mission (recon carrier ships), and when I tried to take pictures of the escorts the photo icon was unavailable. This would explain why.
