1)Premature detonation-Magnetic and Contact.

2)Torps running deeper than set-Magnetic and Contact.

3)Low order explosion when the primer goes off and doesn't set the torpex off-Contact.

4)Torpedo goes in a direction other than the one it was set for-Magnetic and Contact

5)Torpedo hits target and fails to go off-Contact

6)torpedo runs under target and fails to go off-Magnetic

7)Torpedo does a circular run-Magnetic and Contact.

So if you fire a MkIV Torp and it does one of these things(except 3 which I don't think is modeled in the game),it's just the game recreating the wonderful world of MkIV Torps and not a bug. Even if you turn dud torps off,the devs said you will still get the occasional dud just to keep things interesting as it were.

I think the MKIV came with a few other exciting "features" but I can't recollect them at the moment.

I see one omission there. US torpedo bombers also used a variation of the MkIV. And they actually did complain about torpedo performance, but as it was with the sub version, their complaints were discounted, except in the pilot's case BuOrd claimed they must have dropped the torps at either too high a height,or at too high a speed.

The BuOrd was real good at blaming everybody but their own selves.:nope:

Number 3 on the list would come across as a louder, messier (fish possibly blows apart instead of blows up), 'bounce' off the side of your target. So, while not modeled, the effect is the same as a dud hit.

8) An arrogant and stubborn COMSUBPAC giving you a poor endorsement on your patrol reports, blaming errors on poor torpedo maintenance or command incompetence. ;)

Admirals English and later Lockwood at Pearl didn't take too long to realize there was a problem with the torps.

On the other hand Christie and Fife in Australia took alot longer to understand that there was a problem. Besides...either Christie or Fife (I forget which one) actually worked at the BuOrd before the war and for a long time he refused to believe there was anything wrong with the torpedos.

Subs sailing from Pearl were eventually allowed to deactivate the magnetic exploders...but as soon as they entered areas commanded by Fife or Christie they had to reactivate them again...what a way to fight a war.
