So, what was the rationale behind this particular design decision? Why make the submarine invincible? So that the mission cannot be failed by "accidently" sinking the submarine before it is photographed?

I was MOST disappointed to see that, after going through all the work to get into the subpen and the general excitement of sneaking into an otherwise well-protected bay, that I was unable to damage a vessel which does not appear in the manual.

I'm guessing it has to do with the damage files being incomplete. I managed to sink one with something like 8 MK14s once but it just drifted to the bottom without a kill message even though the .cfg lists it as being worth 400 renown.

I get that in harbors a lot. My theory is that the harbors themselves aren't deep enough for the ships to register as sunk. There are a few, such as Saipan, which are deep enough for that to not be a problem.

Yeah strikor thats what i was thinking kinda annoying but no doubt some one will build a fix for it or hopefully in the next patch:up:

This "feature" was often in SH3 too.

i had a similar mission just starting out; it was December 1941 and they wanted my ship to photograph two japanese carriers anchored in Manila Bay, about 20 km from the start point. im pretty sure the instructions said that i could engage them if the situation looked favorable, but when you get into range to take a picture, theres a sub net stretching ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE BAY! making it impossible to even get within range to fire a torp. two escort carriers, sitting there all alone and with no fires banked in the boilers....i hate this branch.
