So I'm out on patrol and learn that my home port, Manila, has been taken by the Japanese. I use my last torps to sink an Agano, and make the loooooong trip to Freemantle Australia, only to find that all I can do is re-supply.

Huh?

I cannot dock at my homeport, and I cannot dock at Freemantle. What am I supposed to do?

:damn:

Look around the map to find other ports under Allied control - Surabaya or Brisbane for example.

So I'm not the only one who sank an Agano class in late 1941 - anyone else irritated about that? The Agano was completed only in October 1942, and her three sisters even later (last one in November 1944!). :-?

I fell back to Surabaya when Manilla fell. Had no problems.

Are you positive it was an Agano?

Good point, a lot of Japanese ships types resemble each other. Ise class BBs (before their refit as hybrid BB carriers) resemble Fuso somewhat. DDs especially so.

I cruised back up to Java from Australia and it allowed me to end the mission, and I got a Patrol Medal as well.

That's what the Captain's log said. I can verify monday when I'm back in the office ;).

And while we are at it - what about the three (!) Mogami class cruiser/carrier hybrids I encountered on my first patrol out of Manila in Dec. 41? Historically only one ship of the class (Mogami herself) was converted to such a hybrid, and only after Midway. Such errors in the 'availability of targets' reflect poorly on an otherwise great game.
Mmh, Reminds me of SH1 - in one war career I once managed to sink four Yamato class battleships...

I checked the log and indeed it was an Agano.

Another oddity I encountered today - after a refit at Manila I was cruising towards the exit of Manila Bay when I spotted a single small Japanese freighter plowing happily along. My deck gun did what Fort Drum et al. obviously failed to do - but what was the Jap skipper (i.e. the AI) thinking of running his ship into the lion's den?

I sunk 3 Aganos in December 1941, in the same convoy. In fact, there are 13 Aganos present in the EastAsiaCampaign.mis campaign layer.

I've seen 4 Yamatos in one formation. The Japanese shipyards have been operating in overdrive apparently.
