What better place to ask for advice than the one place you feel most comfortable at! (Neal, maybe you should have the CHEERS! theme song play when you visit subsim.com! C'mon, do it for a week, it'll be good for a laugh! lol!)
This is not necessarily a request for legal advice, but a plead for help interpreting the law, as I am just a layman in that regard.
Anyway, long story not-so-short:
I am a tenant at a place that has recently been purchased by a new Landlord, that wants to convert to condo's. While I have no problem with this, my concern is that they aren't being very forthcomming with information, and have been a little shady in some respects. So, to protect myself, my family and other tenants here (some are disabled retirees that have no other place to go) ...
I have decided to start a Tenants Association for my complex and provide real and factual information base for the tenants here so they are aprised of all the things they need to know about their rights as a tenant, and what is involved with converting to condo's. I have gone so far as to start the preliminary research, and create a website, which I hope to have done by the end of this weekend.
My main concern for doing so is that when I brought asked questions based on information I recieved from the Residential Tenancies Act people, the Landlord's Agents basically waved them off ("those people who answer those phones are call center laymen. They don't know anything. If you have questions about this, ask us.") Yeah, okay.
Regardless, being the person I am, I have to stand up and say "Hold On". Even though my wife and I have enough saved for the house we want to buy (we can't stop saving since we started, now our goal is 25% down, and we are almost there!) I want to start and put in place something for the other tenants here, so that they can help, support and protect eachother after we have moved on. There are a lot of good people here, and I don't want to see them screwed over for a quick buck.
Essentially my request is this: because I am not as well versed in law as apparently the Landlord's Agents are (which was showcased tonight at a meeting that they hosted), I would like help in understanding and interpreting Section V of the Residential Tenancies Act (http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/DBLaws/Statutes/English/06r17_e.htm) and any related parts of the Condominium Act that may apply, so that I fully understand the facts and can relate them to the other tenants here, without relying on the Landlord's advice.
Thanks so much in advance from myself and other tenants here that I hope to help, any and all input, constructive critisism and otherwise, is GREATLY Appreciated!
Cheers all!
James
