View Full Version : SH3 w/Grey Wolves vs. SH4??

I played SH3 for a while when it first came out. Buggy, etc. and lost interest.

Recently have lurked on the SH3 boards and became quite interested in the Grey Wolves Mod due to the accolades from the community for realism and extensive mods to the original game.

Have held off until I viewed how SH4 would do the first month into its release.

If graphics and eye candy are not big priorities for me, would I be better served going with SH3 and GW for realism, bug free, challenging experience? Or is SH4 going to be a better sim say another 2 months down the road? Is the dynamic campaign in SH4 a big step forward vs. SH3?

Thanks

SHIII + GWX is the way to go at this point. In a few months or a year SHIV will be the better of the two.

You need to get GWX 1.03 the Grey Wolves Expansion:yep:, do not wait any longer.
A great, great Super-mod:up::up:

Someone can comment on SH4.

SH3 with GWX slipped into the program files is an out of body experience.

If you are looking for an immersive sub sim experience, SH3 with GWX is the way to go... The only other sim (although a flight one) which gave me such an immersion was Janes/EA F-15.

SH4 eventually will be an awesome sim, with the continued support of the dev team and the modders community.

I agree, SHIII & GWX is the way to go for the time being. I only just started playing with GWX and I can say its a 200% improvement on the stock SHIII, the new sounds (especially the crash dive one! ALLLAARRRRMMM!!!!) are awesome. Overall the immersion is way better than SHIV, the crew seem to be a bit zombie like in it theres no real connection apart from the fact they are there in front of you!

You do realize of coarse, that the ALLLARRRRRRMMMMM!!!! sound effect, as well as the background crew noises are from "Das Boote". A must see film, if you haven't done so already!

Having played both, and just got into GWX, I have to say there is NO comparison..

Will SH4 be as good? In all reality all everyone does is "hope" but the truth is NO ONE will know for sure..

I hope so, I really do, but at this time stick with GWX until more patches come out

In terms of being a really-well-tested and improved game, of course SH3+GWX is right now the way to go. But I personally believe that the real choice is more one of theaters than of "games". If you are a fan of Pacific submarine warfare, SH4 is for you....if you prefer the legend and glamour of U-Boots go for Sh3. If you just want to approach the subsims world, any of them will be good for you.

The only thing in Sh4 "better" compared with sh3 are the enviroment graphics ,like transparent water ,and some gameplay details.

the new theater, the scenario, the boats, the new enemy, not are better, are only different compared with sh3.

sh3 and GWX will stay a lot of time in my hard disk until another game or a big mod are released

GWX is very good if you like playing the U boat war in 43 - 44, but I have issues with the 'Happy Time' part of it. I think the destroyers and escorts are just a little to effective early in the war. I don't know, it might be fixed by now!

SH3 + GWX + Wolves at War Online Clan (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/www.wolvesatwar.org).

Nothing better.

Don't you think its a bit unfair to compare a game that has been patched up and have 2 years worth of mods attached to it, to a game that has only been out for a couple weeks?

Anyone still have issues with savegame corruption in SH3? That's why I stopped playing and I'm loathe to even install it again to try GWX unless it got fixed at some point along the way that I didn't notice. I've asked a lot about this but nobody seems to know. I'd save deep in enemy territory surrounded by many ships, submerged, and that would usually greatly increase the odds that my savegame would be corrupt.

Not really.

Discounting the patchable items which will probably exist in any iteration of any game, the developers had those same two years and free access to all the mods to experiment with and even add enhancements to, since all the work was already done by someone else. Additionally they had two years of forum entries to read and get a good handle on what the paying customer wanted or at least, thought. Reading the forum is how mods get built anyway.

Not reinventing the wheel is not rocket science, yet the developers insisted on doing it when time saving information is readily and easily available.

Having said all that, many pitifully obvious items requiring patches were found by the community within days (or less) of its release, through simple gameplay, so no sympathy from me on the patch issue either. I'm a big fan of the SH series having owned them all, but I'm having a hard time working up a lather for the latest release.

I plan to give GWX my full attention since it was just released and I think it's rude to let all that work go to waste.

No, not if you want to play right now.

Sh4 works just fine for me. Sure its got a few bugs, but i think it's been made tolerable enough through mods to keep playing while you wait for the next patch.

considering the big stink raised about X1 software, does anyone seriously think that Ubi would use very much of peoples work here? They might take an idea, and build up upon it from scratch, but thats about all they could do.

The only fair comparision is SH3 vs SH4. People seem to forget that SH3 had its round of patchs too, and some very serious bugs as well. Just for starters, how about a sonar man that wouln't sound off the contacts? Of course a few months from now a SH4 : (insert mods here) vs Sh3:GWX might be more of a valid comparision.

I totally enjoyed SH3 with GWX. But after a while, the Atlantic theatre has worn out it's welcome on my hard drive. SH4 in my opinion needs some work, like all games that come out. But so far, I'm absolutely amazed by the content in this sim. And the graphics totally blow anything from the SH3 world away. I even think the theatre of operations is more interesting. And it's good to be on the winning side. ;) I would never go back to SH3 in any variant. Maybe someday I'll get a small itch to drive a Uboot again. Maybe. But for now, give me my US Navy Fleet boat, and may God have mercy on the IJN.....Because I certainly won't.

Which do you think is better: a game that came out years ago and has been worked on for almost as long by a very talented group of modders or a game that was released weeks ago?

Come on, these posts are getting tiresome. Anybody that has more than a passing interest in simulations knows that mods make the game a simulation, it's the developers job to provide a solid base for these modders (who don't work under publisher restrictions).

You seem to miss the point. The question is what is best right NOW, not in three months when patching is done and mods are pouring out. SH4 will be better, the added flexibility of the dynamic campaign, and the stunning graphics will ensure that (when FSAA is possible), but I actually think SH3+GWX is better at the moment.

Thanks to all.

Stabiz is on the mark...

Right now, and maybe say for the next 6 months until patches and modders catch up, I want to invest my time on a sim that most say SH3 with GWs is a deep, rewarding, bug free, challenging experience.

As I am sailing in the Atlantic, I'll keep checking with what's going on in the Pacific Theater. I imagine, a lot of what I learn with a U Boot will be transferable some day to Uncle Sam's service.

Best of both worlds! Great sim now, another great sim to look forward say at about Xmas.

I agree with spin doctor, I was expecting more then this. Also not to be too overly optmistic , but I remember when pacific fighters was released, there was talk that the problems would be fixed with patches / mods and the game would be salvaged..... it never materialized.

SH3 plus Grey Wolfs super Mod/expansion does great big smelly dog poo's all over SH4, no hesitation.

Be warned SH3-GWX is not for the weak willed or the faint of heart, only the biggest hardest of he-men should enlist.
