I just odered DSL and there used to be a site when you enter your address in it tells you how far you are from the service station.

It's not that simple. If you were beyond the max linear distance they wouldn't have accepted your order, but what also comes into play and what they won't know until they actually hook it up and test it is the condition of the trunk cabling on the route. If it's old enough you could live right next door to the Central Office and it still wouldn't work.
