I firmly believe that all taxes are evil. On the other hand I fully understand the need: no taxes, no roads. No taxes, no police or fire departments. The argument is always where to draw the line.
I even agree with a lot of social taxes, but I prefer them to stay on the state or local level; I believe the job of the Federal Government is to represent the people in dealings with foreign nations and arbitrate in disputes between the states.
Of course there are those who feel otherwise, and as was shown at the 1787 Constitutional Convention by Benjamin Franklin, nothing ever gets done without some compromise.
My bottom line is this: I firmly believe that congresses, legislatures and parliaments on the whole do what they think is best, and that includes levying taxes and spending the money raised where they see fit. I just feel that a lot of them think that raising taxes is the best, and sometimes only, solution. I'd be a lot more comfortable if they would take my attitude, that all taxes are evil, and what must be considered in every case is whether the good accomplished is worth the evil done to the taxpayer.
As long as tax goes on making the world a better place via schools, transport, health, hospitals, the military and culture then I am all for it.
I want to live in a country that can be proud of these things and is ready to pay for them. I firmly believe that gross national happiness is more important than gross national income.
My last paycheck was almost cut in half by tax, but I still say, the more tax the better!
What I don't like, is tax that makes the rich richer, or just disappears in to government desk jobs. :nope:
I firmly believe that congresses, legislatures and parliaments on the whole do what they think is best
Really??! What on earth would motivate them to do that?
I firmly believe that congresses, legislatures and parliaments on the whole do what they think will keep them in power. Not because they are evil, but because they are victims of the mechanics of government.
I personally don't understand why people think taxes are evil. The only way that they can be is if they're implemented incorrectly, ie. overtaxing the middle class/lower class and not taxing the rich proportionally.
I see taxes, for me the non-wealthy Canadian, like the government taking our collective money and buying services wholesale with it. Its like have you ever gotten together with a few friends, pooled some cash, and then bought something that you couldn't afford by yourselves? Thats how I view it. Its society being stronger together. The rich obviously resist taxing because they can afford most of what taxes go towards providing for the other 90% of people, so naturally it isn't in their self interst.
My problem with taxes is that they never levy them on the right people. The rich make money off of the labour and land which belongs to the majority of the citizens of any democratic nation. Shouldn't they have to then put back in a fair share of what they've reaped, just like the rest of us?
