Am I missing something? Last night started a career, my first, and I thought I had realism settings pretty high, I had No map contact update enabled and all that stuff. As I was going towards my patrol grid, icons appeared on my nav map showing some contacts... now, what I was expecting is to be grey markings, but they were actually showing in red for enemy, blue for friendlies and green for neutrals... Is that right? Is there a setting that will just grey it out so I have to identify it myself? Thanks!

sounds like you're using stock SH3?

my understanding of how the no map contact updates works is when your crew actually sights a ship, or when you are targeting a ship through the periscope he wont show up on the map.

Yea, stock SH3 patched to 1.4. I just got it a week ago, so I decided to play and practice on that before doing any mods. It kinda bothers me that it tells me in the map with the contacts if they are friendly, neutral or enemies, I wish I could change that, so it is just a "ship contact" and it is up to me to find it and figure out the nationality...

Search the mods forum and you might get lucky mate, most of the Supermods (NYGM GWX ect ) do this automatically.

I remember it being annoying for me too before GWX, so I'm pretty confident that someone will have come up for a cure for it

No, it's not like that at all.

there are two kinds of contact icons that show up on the map:

First, there's the contacts that you yourself have aquired. These no longer show up on the nav-map when you turn off the map's autoupdate feature (God's eye view).

The other kind of contact icon that pops up on the map from time to time is the one you're alking about. It is meant to represent a radio report telling you about enemy activity. Some other Uboat spoted the target, or maybe a plane from the Luftwaffe, or maybe even a spy leaking information about enemy activity. We all agree that it was an unfortunate game-design decision of having these radio reports represented simply as ship icons that misteriously pop up on the map without any "apparent" reason instead of through a true radio communication report (with the extra anoyance factor that most of the time they don't bring time compression back to normal and hence you'll miss a lot of these unless you're very attentive to the nav-map screen). But nevertheless, it is in fact CORRECT that they show up already identified as friend or foe, because the guy who initialy reported the contact was perfectly capable of identifying it as friend or foe In situ. :hmm:

I understand what you're saying, but with the GWX 1.03 mod they no longer do show up identified. I get these random pop ups that, like you said, I always assumed were from intelligence reports somehow. Especially because they're always quite a ways off, sometimes even 100km or so. But on my map everything always appears grey. I actually kind of wish it did appear in the proper color so I knew. in the middle of the night its almost impossible to identify a merchant ship running with no lights. In fact, without the outer view I don't think I could even if I literally ran right next to the ship. Let me tell you, its a good thing the Norwegians purposefully point lights at their flags otherwise I would have accidently sunk quite a few of them (still 39 so they're neutral).

If they're dark ships, I always attack them.

So far, up to my current (12th) patrol, late 1941, neutral and friendly ships always have lights pointed at their flags... even in daylight.

Just recently, I got a contact report, west of Canary, I then set a course to intercept them. They were two large cargos, one had Brazilian flag the other Egyptian flag, and both of them light their flags. I chekced the "flaggen" and yes those countries are neutral.

So if it's a dark ship, I always attack it :D

Gotcha, I didn't realize all neutrals did that. Thought maybe it was just those Norwegians. From now on, those without lights will be lit up by my torps!!:rock:

I know  , that's one of the very few things I don't like about the GWX mod, which in turn inherited from a lot of other popular mods before it. Very few things are as annoying as succesfully running an intercept on a radio contact only to find out that it's a neutral ship...you'd think BdU could filter their intel a bit more than that, no?

Earlier this week I sank my first merch using GWX 1.03, it was a good shot. Happy as I was about it, I made a screenshot. After I quit SH3, I watched it, and only then I discovered to my suprise that it was a German merch, man was I mad

I believe those contacts are those that your boat makes through its own RDF.
