View Full Version : Does radar stop working for you?

Here's the scenario. Im crusing along with SJ and SD radar. ( the geometry of which i think ive gotten fixed so SD radar doesnt pick up ground targets). I get a SJ radar contact. Two merchants. I dont have enough time, so i save the game, and come back to it later.
Load the game. Radar is on, its sweeping, but its not picking up anything. Radar contacts are gone. Its like after having loaded a game something went wonky. Worked fine up until then. Anyone run into this? I seem to run into this quite often. Is there a work around to get it working again? Or is this a "wait for next patch" scenario?

aparently nearby ships disapear when you save.

Yes, it happens to me often. Aircraft have surprised me and DDs have rammed me in the fog because of my ineffective radar. It always happens late in my patrols so the save game theory makes sense.

I've found out that the SD radar is better at picking up ships than picking up planes. At the beginning of a patrol the SD radar picks up every ship and most of the planes, but towards the end it still picks up the ships but but nearly no planes. I only know that planes are around when my watch crew reports them, usually 10 seconds before they bomb me.:nope::shifty:

Pretty pathetic. This is officially a beta. :damn:

Yeah, this happened to me. Had a DD lined up in my attack peri but had to save to go do something else. when I came back he had teleported about 3000 yards away. Most odd.
Yeah, I had this happen too. But it wasn't a save, the SD radar has been tracking a japanese carrier force fine! Even through the saves. My problem happened when I was coming into Midway, suddenly all ships that had been seen by radar, were not detected. OK, it was my fault. I was experimenting with the radar station, seeing what controls worked and what did not. I changed the range from 40,000 to 80,000 continious sweep to single and back again. I go back to the Nav map and POOF! Nothing is detected by radar according to the Nav map. The ships are there, but radar refuses to detect them. No amount of cajoling or cursing could get the radar to detect them again. Now, I am entereing Japanese territory hoping the radar is working.
Yes, I did check to make sure the radar was on, and it was. I double checked, by going to the bridge and looking up at the radar dish, it was rotating. If it is off or focused it does not move.
The Radar is totally FUBAR'd in this game! ITs best not to fiddle with any of the radar controls and just leave it ALONE!

Well, you could look at it this way. Early radar was breaking all of the time from the accounts I read. Check out the excellent "Red Scorpion" (war patrols of the Rasher) for more info. It happened a lot.

If radar breaks why not show the damage in the damage control panel ?
Also with SD radar when if use the show position on map it is like have a modern tracking radar but if i turn the option off the operator advise me of a contact , lets say "radar contact at 010,long range" but after that? Nothing, nada , niente .... i am not able to know if tha contact is closing or is moving away i can't see it on the SD radar screen (THERE IS NO SD radar screen) i can't even ask to the operator what s is going on.
The fact is that RADAR here is just a little piece of crappy metal.
Please gives us SD screen and SJ screen so i can know what s is going on.

Im starting to wonder if there's a bug in relation to using the radar station manually. In otherwords, if i never go to the radar station in the conning tower, and just let the crewman handle it, would it continue to work after saving and reloading the game? Wishful thinking maybe? *shrug*
No, I think you have it right Ducimus. Leave the manual radar controls alone and all should be fine. The contacts will appear on the map in grey color, Ships and aircraft. The SD is bugged and you get air & ship contacts, which should not happen, it should give air only. You might still get aircraft that sneak up on you, I know I have, but overall report of contacts is good. It was only after I played with the radar station in another career that the contacts disappeared.

The SD is bugged and you get air & ship contacts,
This is easily fixable. EDIT:
I take that back.. no it's not easily fixable. I tried, and failed, repeatedily.
Another piece of the radar puzzle. I started a career in 44,Balao out of Pearl. Radar would just turn off at random (not due to waves etc.). I mapped the R key to Radar toggle, F to Sweep/Focus & G to Radar Range. I found I was constantly hitting "R" during high TC runs. Once in enemy waters the radar stayed active as it should.??? I have also noticed when my contacts disappear from the scope, If I turn the unit off then back on again they will be right there again. Odd. :hmm:

Happens to me when I'm in a Balao class as well! I don't sail a Balao because of it. Playing SH4 is almost like reliving the Mark 14 torpedo fiasco. You keep finding bugs... :D

Yes it happened to me at start mission, but radar contacs come back if you submerge and surface.
Another thing i experienced, was i loss al air contacts after upgrade to SJ-1... may be the combination SJ-1 and Improved SD doenst works fine.
At next mission, i change my SJ-1 by an standard SJ, and stay with SJ, and Improved SD, and air contacts comes back...

Here is something im finding with my radars, as soon as you steer any course South of East or West ..... ie the boats bow crosses 90/270 heading south you loose all radar contacts. Turn back to the north and as soon as the bow reaches 90/270 or any degree north of that the contacts return.
It does not matter where the contacts are in realation to your boat ..... only the direction your traveling.

The SD is bugged and you get air & ship contacts,
This is easily fixable. The SD radar has a min height of 6 meters and a max height of 2500 meters. The SJ radar has min hieght of 0 meters and a max height of 200 meters.
All one has to do, is raise the min height of the SD radar so it wont pick up ship masts. Ive made the adjustments but its kinda hard to test in a career game when the radar stops working :88) Hopefully by just not manually using the radar i can proceed forward with this. ;)
Has someone released a mod with these adjustments included? I don't remember seeing it if so. Link?

Funny. When I submerged and surfaced during the artillery training mission, I lost all radar contacts.
I, personally, cannot wait til they fix radar.
Will it be possible to turn off SD? or is that always on?

More on this ..... first noticed in the campagin so I made a single mission with a start date of 1945 so I could test most of the subs. Parked a stationary Yamato in the middle and have been sailing all around it out of visual range. Its the same for every sub I have tried. If your bow is pointing north the radar works ..... turn south and you lose the contact.
Im assuming that is the same for air contacts but have not tried that yet .

I tried, and failed...... miserably. I think ive only reduced the number of surface contacts.. at best. and even that is doubtful after more playtesting.
