The good news keep coming in :)

I always held that site in high regards. Their taste is akin to mine.

Good review :yep:

I love the comments:
If your machine is up to it, then this really is visually stunning. The new environmental effects really make the engine shine, from above or bellow the water. Playing on a big screen (I'm projecting it at 100") its very engaging, and has a fantastic film like quality.

I'm not really noticing any issues with the resolution or FSAA, and I'm sure these will be patched soon anyway. There are some bugs at the moment that really do need sorting, but again the devs are aware of these.

Reading on the subsim forums and you'd think the game had more bugs than Driver3, it really doesn't, they just get very anal about the realism. Not that that's a bad thing, but I still want the game to be more about fun than a real sim.

Lol, gripers are "anal" :rotfl:

Seriously, though, this comment is similar to what I am reading on a lot of forums inhabited by general gamers; game has bugs but overall great.

I think a score of 8.0 is more in line than some of the higher scores I've seen. I think it's fair to grade the stock game as C+ or B- that sounds about right to me. It's definitely not in the "A" range...though it might well be with more patches and mods. :yep:

No dobut the reviewer has a big heart for subsim games like the rest of us :) Since Ive sunk more than 20 hours into this game by now, I can mostly agree with the reviewer.

Also another 15 seconds of fame for the subsim site eh? Hope the old girl don't keel over from the masses of bilge rats that pops up all over these days ^^

He's definitely recognised the fact, that despite it's obvious shortcoming - there's a lot to love about it.

On the other hand, the German counterpart to Eurogamer gave 6/10 because of the bugs, mainly.

I think it is a far more honest evaluation. SH4 has all the potential to receive a 9.5 score once it will be properly corrected with patches. As is, this sim is closer to a 6.5 - 7...

It is a sim, after all, and although nice graphics are important and welcome, any keyboard controls causing CTDs should really be taken into account when evaluating it.

Haha, well thats one of my comments, and I stand by it.

I love that you guys are so pasionate about modding the game to make it as realistic as possible. But that can have a negative effect on non-sim fans. Bugs are bugs, the dying crew members, TDC issues when setting torps to fast speed and things like that and need to be fixed. They detract from the game. However I do doubt most people will know and mind if, say, a certain sub has radar too early. Im going to try out the mod to make the escorts more dangerous, as last night I managed to slip into a convoy, make a load of noise, and never get detected. For me it was too easy (even though I was on 0% realism) I still want to be chassed, but I dont want to install mods that make it impossible. For examle id never want to play a truely realistic racing game, as I (and im sure most people) would crash on the first corner.

Silent Hunter is great in that through various settings it can be played more as an arcade game, right through to full on accurate sim. I have no idea about numbers, but id guess theres a large percentage of SH owners who play it easier rather than hard, and if the series is to grow it needs to be as accessible as possible to the beginer.

I look forward to what the modders will do, but im more in anticipation of the patchs to fix bugs at the moment.

Oh, and a proper manual. I tried manual aiming earlier on, and thanks to your TDC instruction video I had varying success. Id never had had as much luck from the manual. Saying that I couldnt properly how to figure out speed, the manual mentions something about using the stopwatch, but I couldnt seem to get that to do anything at all!

Anyway, time to fire up that projector and continue my patrol.
