View Full Version : Sank two with conning tower while time compressed

Strangest encounter I've ever had. I was running at PD and was kept hitting time compression to get past a convoy that I was picking up on radar and had recieved a report about. Before I (or the game) drops back to normal time: I hear two explosions, and see two sunk ship markers and hear the first depth charges go boom nearby. First I'm sure I just got killed but, start to realize that my boat is intact so I go deep to get away from the destroyers and start handling damage control while I figure out WTF.

My Obs Scope Head is totalled even though it was down and the Attack scope is fine even though it was up. The deck gun and AA gun have sustained some damage. As near as I can tell, I shoved the conning tower through the bottom of two ships and sank them but, apparently I don't get credit for them 'cuz they don't show in the log. I'd sure like to know what they were...

Next screwy thing is that I seem to be having problems with ballast control or control surfaces. After I wait a while, I try to go to PD to check things out but, I just can't get there - I rise a bit and then hover after ordering PD or setting depth a few times I finally order surface. I am able to rise more but, verrrry slooowly so, I order a flank bell and finally get up.

I check the DC screen and confirm that I don't have any other damage and use the external camera to check out my boat and every thing looks ok so I take her down to see if it will repeat. At the moment, I am hovering below the surface at about 25 degree upangle, doing a full bell - this while I have PD ordered. My bow and scope each look to be 5-10 feet below the surface and it looks like I could keep this up for days...

Anyhow I don't know if bugs are involved or what but it's the one of the oddest series of occurences...

This reminds me of a bug that was present in early SHIII....if you had your scope raised and a destroyer hit your periscope, it would go down in a haze of flames....

Pretty lethal for a scope...looks like this bug was reproduced as well.

A destroyer killed itself on my periscope in SH4, as well.

A closer look at the bow planes - it looks like they are stuck partially extended at a 45 degree angle - neither fully extended nor fully retracted. I'm not sure if this entirely explains my control problem. What concerns me more is that I don't think I'll be able to repair them. And even if I could, planes are buzzing around like I stirred up a hornets' nest so, I can't stay on the surface for long without being attacked...

Stick a fork in it - this one's done...

I had much the same thing happen to me in the s-39 out of Manila. I dive to periscope depth, but my bow is still sticking out the water. I checked, but no damage was showing up. sure made me easy pickings for those planes, though.
