Apologies if this has been mentioned before. Had a look around the forums and online to try and find some more infomation on tactics and methods for firing solutions that do not require use of the periscope while at periscope depth.
I noticed in the specs and info for the Later Uboats IXB and up that it said that they were able to fire without using the periscope. Has anyone actually done this?

I hope I can answer this correctly.
As far as I know from my reading about U-boats and the Battle of the Atlantic, etc., the only U-boat capable of firing without observation was the Type XXI. However, only one or two Type XXIs became operational (post training and workup) by April 1945. As we know the war ended on or about May 9, 1945 and therefore not one torpedo was ever fired by a Type XXI at an enemy target.
A U-boat Captain by the name of Shnee commanded the first Type XXI. After receiving Donetz's message of capitulation in early May 1945, he made a unobserved, submerged torpedo attack on some British cruisers but he never fire a torpedo.
While I have done no reading on the US submarine warfare in the Pacific, I've been told that only one US sub commander made a successful torpedo firing by hydropnone contact on an enemy target during WWII.

So theoretically its possible with the XXI in game to hunt without using the periscope, but not really feasable.

ahoy,
shootting when submerged IS possible in SH3, no matter what sub you use. your hits can be pretty accurate even when you cant see the target. most likely, it is not historically correct so if you dont like it, just dont do it.
I made an exhaustive hydrophone tutorial with a lot of pics explaining (not only) "blind" shooting. however, only a few people seemed to be interested..........

Excellent. Thanks for the link, will read over it at work now. Was mainly interested due to the hug profile of the larger subs and also to give myself a challenge before I download GWX (which hopefully should be tonight provided my new gfx card is in stock)
