Hello Fellow Sub Commanders,:arrgh!:

I would like to ask if anyone knows where I can learn about the Torpedo Types in this game. Silent Hunter 3 gave us good descriptions about each Torpedo but this one just tells me if it's a Mark 10 or a Mark 18. Am I missing something in the game or what? Please help me out, I'm new to the Pacific.

Yes please! I'd like some torp info as well please... But then I suppose I could Google it. I do miss the info window that appeared in SH3 describing ship upgrades though.

I've got over my initial disappointment with SH4. Managed to get over 28000 tons on last patrol... All bar one medium spilit frighter with the guns though and I had to surface to finish off that one with the deck gun!

It seems my problem was having the dud torps setting set to on. Was the US Navy really sending it's subs out with a 4 out of 5 dud ratio of torps that explode way before the impact point even on contact only setting?

Got some nice screenies though... :D

And a killer computer on order that should make short work of all the graphic options with its 8800GTX card and Core 2 Duo 6600 setup!

More than you probably want to know :)

As for the later war torpedoes, not sure if they're in there...
A Mk 18 is US knockoff of the German G7e.
A Mk 23 is a Mk 14 without the low speed setting.
A Mk 27 is a small, short range, 12 knot acoustically guided torpedo meant to be used in self defence against enemy escorts.

And another great site, with pictures and more info

Oh yes, it was horrible. read my link in one of thise post. I 'll put here after I find the article. 70% was very typical until they figured out how to set the impact pin.

Fast moving torpedo was hitting so hard to cause friction in the contact pin making a 90 degree shot the worst, it took time for them to get the contact pin figured out. Then the problems with the magnetic detonators.

I have no idea if the game models the Dud rate per month and year to reflect this very important fact. Plus the smaller M10 actually worked better (wether the game models this is unknown).

Lucky, modders made a program Jone's JSME that you could insert the new data for Dud rate (SH4 seems to support modding this in Torpedo_US.sim) for the month/year you go on cruise. That way there would be a reason to use other torpedo even if they seem lesser, and either to use a contact or magnetic setting.

Look how bad the failure rate was in this article, best one on the subject I have seen:
