Alright, the first subsim I played was SH1. Got it on the very day it came out. Well, recently I've gotten into the genre again, with my purchase of SH3 several months ago, and the SH4 CE on Friday. Well, I'm finally ready to do my first patrol. I've gone through the tutorials, finally mastered the art of using torpedoes with accuracy, and started my first patrol.

Well, I've been assigned to leave Pearl bound for Tokyo Harbor to take some photos for Naval Intelligence. I am driving a Porpoise class sub. The problem is that I'm a couple of hundred nm past Midway, and I'm already down to 50% diesel reserves. There is no way that I'm going to make it back to Pearl. So, I guess my question is: Can I dock at another friendly port for resupply before returning to Pearl? Thanks:up:!

Yes, do as the real life boats did when leaving Pearl...stop in at Midway to top off the tanks. If you approach the dock, you should get a popup asking if you want to refit. Say yes, and you'll be on your way.

Another thing on the topic of fuel conservation, remember the slower you go, the longer your fuel lasts. I've found a good mix of speed and fuel conservation is running at 10-12 knots to and from station. While I'm there patrolling, I usually travel at about 6.

Hope this helps.

I found a bug in the older version where i lost all my fuel going at standard for cruise mode (tried to limp home at 2/3 but it was too late by then) but even on empty tanks my motors kept going for another 500 nM. Anyway, wrong thread to be talking about that in...

My real question is what is the most preferable speed for cruising in TC 64x +?
Does going at 2/3 instead of standard really conserve fuel better? I mean, when you click return to course (from a stand still) the crew automatically set you ahead standard speed (as it was in SH3). Why is this the case if optimal cruise speed is in fact slower?

I flank to midway..

from midway, it is ahead 1/3, arriving off the japanese coast with over 3/4 tank left. at around 500 nm from Japan, i run submerged during daylight hours.

when on station, i run 1/3 at night surfaced and submerged during the day at 2 knots. unless fast maneuvering is need, i run at these speeds. head back to midway at 1/4 tank

Thanks:up:!

Now, a follow-up question if I may: Can you do the same thing in SH3?

My problem is the opposite. I sailed from Pearl to clear to Japan, and still have full tanks.

What realism setting are you playing on?

Check your options (the radio on the left shelf in your "office") after starting a campaign. Sometimes realism settings are reset when starting the campaign.
