Diving below the gauge max

Since we can't currently dive and maintain depth with the 'a' key, how do you dive deeper than the 165' displayed on early subs gauge? I might be missing something obvious, but is there a way to dive to say 220' and maintain that depth, even though the gauge only goes to 165', with the current version of SH4?

Each gauge has two displays - click the button beneath it and it will switch to a bigger meter. The compass switches to a rudder position display, and the telegraph switches to a speedometer.
