Hell strength and collisions at sea...

I mean HULL strength...can't edit subject line...sorry!

So I just finished my first career war patrol...thank you thank you, please hold all applause until the end...Anyway, I sank two gun boats, two destroyers and two merchants, all totaling just over 10,000 tons of shipping, I won't count a third merchant that I slammed 6 torpedoes into but just wouldn't go down!...anyway, not too much of a great run, but at least I lived to talk about it...

Here's the thing though...during night hunting, I was rammed not once, but twice by japanese destroyers and I sustained little damage as a result...the sound was God awful but the bark was definitely bigger than the bit...the destroyers were moving quick and I can only assume that I should have been seriously damaged if not sank by one or both of these collisions...So I'm wondering, is the collision damage modeling inaccurate at the current build...

I'll also note that I was awarded not only the "wound medal" but also the "Medal of Valor"...isn't that the highest award that can be given in the game? I thought I did really well on my first patrol, but not THAT well!

Destroyers sinking when ramming subs and subs taking only minor damage was also a problem in SH3. Some people tried to argue that the pressure hull of a submarine is thicker than a destroyer's hull, and it was...Buuuut...the destroyer doesn't have to crush the pressure hull, just one of the main ballast tanks, and the sub may not be destroyed, but it will when it quickly passes crush depth.

You're right; getting rammed by a destroyer should almost always be fatal for a submarine.

As to the medals - they are misnamed. There is no 'wound medal', but a Purple Heart, and the highest award should be the Medal Of Honor, and it should only be awarded for something truly exceptional, and you're usually dead at that point.

Seems like we should write a thread for the devs that convert things to American English. Aside form real programming bugs, desired AI chages, etc, ad nauseum, it is rife with language errors. The medals, the ranks, etc.

as for the medals...I'm quite well aware that the medals are misnamed...I was a Marine for 6 years, so I'm quite well acquainted with the purple heart and the medal of honor. My point was that the Medal of Valor in the gmae appears to be the equivalent of the medal of honor and I was awarded that medal after my first patrol...my question is, are medals awarded too easily in SH4?

I just had another look at your thread title. I'm sure you meant "Hull" strength.

And yes, medals are much too easy to get. They were in SH3 too. And SH1.

Sounds like stuff easily fixed by modders . Dont be disheartened because modders and patches do wonderful things . Early days for SH4 yet .
