View Full Version : Going back to Sh3, but here's why..

First off my system doesn't play the game ALL THAT WELL, but it does play it, I just need to turn everything down.
I am going to go back to Sh3 because I thought I had every single mod, but realized I never even knew about the GWX mod, from what I hear its what made SH3 so great. SH3 is really the only reason I have my computer, lol, I played it allot when I had free time and loved it every time I played it..
I played about 10+ hours of SH4 and I don't want to sit here and bash every little thing about the game, you all know everything that is wrong with the game and I have to deal with all the wrong aswell, but to top it off I have longer load times and frame rates are not so good with my system..
I will be back to SH4 I am sure, but I am going to wait a while, atleast until I start to see allot of mods with this game come out, and of COURSE allot of patches.
With that said I wish you all luck with SH4, I hope the modders make this game great as they did with SH3 ( Though I am about to get into the GWX mod tonight )
Thanks all, and I WILL BE BACK, till then I will be over in the Atlantic, can anyone tell me if I am in for a suprise? In for some fun, being I never even knew GWX was there, and I played the game allot?

If you've never played GWX before, you will probably not come back to SH4 for a long, long, time. I'll see you somewhere in the Nord See Herr Kaleun!
Play it with SH3 Weather, SH3 Gen, and launch it with SH3 Commander. It is important to read the extensive GWX manual and installation instructions carefully.

If your lucky you'll get to join the 2nd patrol and your dead club that AVG set up:up:
And I joined:down:
Seriously you'll find GWX very different to stock SH3. A LOT harder but ultimately more rewarding. Enjoy. Hope we'll see you back in the Pacific soon.
Be warned though. If I see your U-Boat in my periscope sights I will launch all my tubes at you.

Just look at the great work modders have done to SH4 already. I've no doubt it will be a great title evetually. I haven't bought it yet and I don't think I will for atleast six months or so.
Till then GWX offers fantastic gameplay. All the screenshots we see of SH4 where subs surface a few thousand metres from enemy capital ships just don't occur (with any chance of survival that is!).
Nope, although I like the idea of a modern pacific based sumsim (and I really love how it is the most popular PC game ATM), I will remain in the Atlantic for awhile.
You will not be disapointed with GWX, enjoy!:yep:

GWX is excellent. You will have a ton of fun with it.
But if you think that SH4 has long load times, just wait until you see the ones for SH3 and GWX. You're talking at least 2 to 3 minutes, easy. This is not a knock on GWX, because I understand the reasoning behind it....it adds so much stuff that there's no way around long load times.

On a P4, 3.6 Ghz, 2 MB ram from the time I click the SH3 icon to the time I am in a campaign patrol we are talking 7 minutes.

I was being very conservative. But now that I think about it, you're right. I would have time to load a game, walk to the mailbox all the way across my apartment complex and come back and still have time to spare.

I'm not sayin' it's not worth the wait.
I'm just sayin' at my age and with my habits 7 minutes is a considerable percentage of the time I have left

Agreed - I'm staying with SH3. Right now I'm shadowing a westbound convoy in the shallows near the mouth of the St. Lawrence:rock: I might consider getting SH4 if the devs ever decide to complete the project (i.e. with a few gigs of patching). Thank god I didn't buy it when it came out; I would have flipped - no bonus materials (Canada) and alpha code:nope:

Pardon me on this question....
I have SH3 as well as SH4.
What is GWX is it just a mod or something special? Also where is a good place to download it and check it out?
Thanks! :D

Totally redesigns SH3, and it's the definitive version of it.

Go to the SH3 Mods board. GWX is a huge supermod for Silent Hunter 3.
At the SH3 Mods board you'll find a very great number of threads devoted to GWX.

Funny you say that, because I seem to get the opposite and find that whenever I'm in Scotland the days feel like weeks
Playing the GWX expansion SH III will give you a glance at what SH IV could look like in about 22 months time (if the modders here want to do their magic again)...it is a diamond out of the rough.
Let's hope so!

WOW GWX looks pretty damn awesome......
I am downloading all of the files right now.
Does the explosions from GWX look just as good compared with SH4?
I can see a lot of detail went into GWX. I hope that these modders apply their skill and expertise to SH4.

I'm sure it's a conditioning thing... ;) The longer you spend here, the less bleak and uninviting the place seems. Maybe.
You're obviously a native, given your username, so don't rub my nose in it by bragging about your new exotic location, thanks.

New, oh no? I've spent most of the last 15 odd years out in the Gulf :sunny:
Born an expat, raised an expat. Spent more time outside Scotland than in it, and unsurprisingly I have an aversion to dark skies, wind and rain.

I woudn't say that. I saw the planes exploded in SH4 and they are very good. But for me, the overalll image quality is better in SH3 ..
GWX is THE mod for SH3. The guys have made a tremendous work on it. I enjoy it like a child in front of christmas tree :yep:
I hope SH4 will become as good as GWX with patch and mods. The Atlantic and the Pacific --> :sunny:
Try it, have fun

4 Seconds to load Sh3 w/GWX! Thanks for the advise!

I've never tried GWX, does it have any problem with save game stability? That's why I stopped playing SH3 - whenever I saved in the thick of a battle, really with any ships on the radar after a suffiently long campaign patrol, it was guaranteed that I wouldn't be able to load from that game. I kept SO many saves just to ensure I wouldn't have to go back too far, but it got ridiculous with the instability. I would be neck deep in a nasty situation that would take a few tries to get out of, and found myself replaying HOURS of work that I had already successfully done just to get home.

SHIII + GWX is hitting a real sweet-spot right now. Kinda like WinXP... it may be a bloated old cow, but with today's hardware it runs like a dream.

Thats a known issue with the core sh3 engine. Never save submerged, and try not to save when other ships are in sight.
With that said I have NEVER had the save game losses that a lot of others have reported. And my load times for SH3 with GWX are about 3 min from clicking on the sh3 icon.
I also HIGHLY suggest using SH3 commander with GWX.... GWX makes the water so dark when submerged, and you can adjust this via SH3 commander.
With that said Part 2.... Im going back to GWX until they patch sh4 a few more times. Way to many bugs... bad graphics, bad TDC shooting torps behind targets...to name a few/

Since we're comparing GWX load times, here's mine. On my Athlon 64 3500 (2.21 ghz) 2 GB ram, Geforce 8800 GTS it takes a little over 5 mins to go from desktop icon to the bridge.
It is well worth the wait. All of you new SH4 players who never played SH3 with GWX...go do yourselves a favor and see what the modders can do. It's amazing.

Kinda like those expensive cognacs where they reveal to you that it was made some decades ago. I guess you gotta let SH4 mature (aka more patches and mods) before it will be better.
Speaking of which, Maybe I should try out GWX.

Part of the load time problem is likely the version of SecuRom.
There's been a few times when I double click on my desktop icon and it takes a full 2 or 3 minutes with the CD symbol going before it times out and says "Unable to authenticate original disc within time limit" and directs me to a web page about dealing with DMA. Which is BS.
Other times it starts right up and sometimes it sits with disk checking for a bit but eventually starts.
I haven't experienced any excessive load times other than the copy protection instigated ones.
*Why can't I have a subsim without a buggy copy protection system? Oh, god, why?*
