Surface Attack with Deck Gun

When first starting the Sub School had a problem with being stuck with aft Deck Gun, then thought how can I use this to my advantage.Thanks to Mush's Uberrboot mod for Sh3, I learned surface battles with deck gun and luved it. So how do you use this to your advantage ? Here's how in sub School Convoy Attack.Wait for contact from lead Escort, turn your sub away from him, when he spots you he heads directly for you, you can easily almost match DD speed so when he gets with'n gun range, Order deck Gun to Fire at will at Weapons, Long Range. Adjust speed accordingly to his gun range and yours, watch where your shells hit.I took out lead escort this way,by the time 2nd and third escorts showed up,
Second DD was Have'n a smoke break and the third DD off my bow was Look'n at me like I was Nuts. Stayed n surface all thru battle,took minor damage which my crew quickly and easily fixed, make sure you have machinists in Damage compartment, take them from Control Room second and third watches

Anyway, it's a sub sim, I fired at the escorts behind the cover of their own ships or hide next to a wreck to shoot at them before running and letting lose a torp or two aft then diving deep and turning hard to port/starboard to avoid those pesky depth charges.

Another way, is basically surface in the middle of the convoy, especially when they move in box formation and let loose everything from guns to torps. Like predators who are smart, concentrate on things you can kill, I simply dive and finishing the dying (limping ships).

lol . prefer to be below the waves, harder to see that way. Aft gun is much better as prefer to be moving away from escorts rather than head'n towards them, Easy pickings of convoy after the escorts are out of the way. Downside is you don't know how much hull damage you have taken, ruff estimate probly can be made by what damage was taken by look'n at your damage compartment, periscope,radar, flak gun in this case.
