Mk 23 Torpedo?

So I was fooling around with SH4 career mode & started a new career with a Gato class in Brisbane; I picked 1943 as the starting year and the game had me start in March.
In the torp screen I noticed Mk 23 torpedoes. I'm not too familiar with this, and tha game doesn't give an explanation, so could somebody briefly describe this particular type of fish?

The Mk. 23 appears to be just another variant of the standard Mk14. A dumbed down version to allow easier manufacturing.

I am curious as to how one would 'dumb down' a Mk 14? It is already a dumb-fire weapon.



So there are no homing torpedos in SHIV then? That is too bad. My reading indicates that the allies did try some types of homing torpedos, and we had then in SH3. Hopefully this can be addressed with a mod.....
