Why Devs?

I'm a casual sub simmer. I loved SH3 because I used auto targeting and just had a blast in MP with other casual gamers. Why has auto been neutered so? And why were other features removed from SH4 that were in SH3?

Such as:
Damage screen
Damage Time to fix (pictured in the manual)
Crew button to get Damage control teams to their stations
HUD redesign (I miss the side menu)
