Right now I catch myself thinking twice about putting a torpedo into a heavy cruiser, just because I might come across 2-3 Carriers and as many battleships later in the same patrol ;) So yeah, might be worthwhile to be picky - depending on where you patrol - the Phillipine Sea and the Luzon Straits plus South China Sea are perfect hunting grounds in my opinion, whereas for example the Solomons/New Guinea I could patrol for almost a week without running across anything (as of March 1942)
Last night I had a beautiful moment when I practically had a task force fall right into my lap, I even botched my approach and STILL made out like a bandit. Patrolling in the Luzon Strait on 12/14/41 and I hear high speed screws off my port bow, about 20km off. And boy is it a beauty: 2 Kongo Class BB's, 2 Takao Class CA's and 6-8 DD's. 3 DD's heard me and started beating the bushes as the rest of the task force started evasive maneuvers, so I snapped a shot off at the nearest one, the middle one, then line up shots on the task force which is breaking off at 90 degree angles from my approach, and generally getting in its own way. Two torps find a Takao Cruiser amidships, and another hits a Kongo in its engine compartment, just forward of where the propeller shaft goes inside the ship. The DD takes a hit and goes down quick, about the same time as the Cruiser is taking its hits. With tub Another torp into the BB settles her down by the stern and as the rest of the task force flees, i skulk away at 80 meters, the DD's are pounding the sea into foam and yet are no where near me at all.
i havent even had time to look at my totals from that one yet, as soon as they faded into the distance i saved my game and went to bed, but im expecting some good tonnage.
