It's a 7c from Sh3. I try to convert it to Sh4. I'll hope I get it work.

I think someone should move this to the mod-forum.

Edit: I can't start the campage with the 7c. The screenshots are taken in a singelplayer mission (midway).

Edit 2: In the mission "Battle of Midway" the US-planes are attacking my boat, the jap. fleet seems friendly.

Hi!

"Gordon Freeman" was a character in the video game Unreal; "Gordon L Freeman" is a computer scientist in the Software Engineering Research Group at Vanderbilt University.

He writes articles like, "The task-dependent nature of the maintenance of object-oriented programs." See here (http://www.vuse.vanderbilt.edu/%7Esrs/files.for.homepage/se-group-pubs.html), for example.

Yes Commanders...Bernard lives in SHIV. :x Like any good Commander, I was looking over my crew before going out on my first patrol and career. Pearl Harbor 1941, I'm checking my crew for their stats and I noticed the name of one sailor. First name...BERNARD...last name Allen. :rotfl: I had to meet this boy who was going to be on my sub. The Chief Petty Officer brings him in and I take a look at him. Oh sh*t...it's him! I've heard stories from captured U-boat commanders who wake up in a sweat yelling BERNARD!..You swine!!:rotfl:

P.S.- Needless to say...Bernard grabbed his seabag and is off to join another submarine.

If you open up "CrewMemberNames.upc" with notepad and look at the list of first and second names that the game will then randomly put together to make up the names of your crew, it is obvious from the many possibilities that there are lots of in-jokes from the development team. This may explain all the posts saying "I've got a crew member called Ivor Biggun" or suchlike

On May 13, 1942, a Mexican oil tanker was torpedoed by a U-boat, killing 13 crewmen. A protest filed by the Mexican government was answered with the sinking of a second tanker. When Germany refused to indemnify Mexico, President Manuel Avila Camacho declared war on the Axis powers.
Nearly a century after a bitter defeat by the United States, Mexico sent a military force to fight against the Axis powers alongside U.S. military forces in World War II. It was the first time that Mexico sent combat personnel abroad and the first time both nations battled a common threat. This unique unit was the Mexican air force, Fuerza Aerea Mexicana (FAM). Its pilots provided air support in the liberation of the Philippines and flew long-range sorties over Formosa, earning praise from Allied theater commander General Douglas MacArthur and decorations from the U.S., Mexican and Philippine governments.

We can only hope that the U.S. and the Allies will more publicly acknowledge Mexico's assistance during WW II. The Mexicans who shed their blood in the skies over the Philippines, as well as those who volunteered to fight for freedom under the Stars and Stripes deserve no less.

Is there a way to open a file which contains all messages?

All the messages are in whatever/Silent Hunter 4/data/campaigns/campaign/messages.txt, complete with values for time, importance and so on.
Here's the really interesting thing: A normal message looks like this (actual message from the file )

@COMSUBPAC@^...^&Fox Traffic&MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM UBISOFT ROMANIA X NOW GO SINK SOMETHING AND MAKE A NICE SCREENSHOT X

now look at these two:

@COMSUBSOWESPAC@^ASIATIC FLEET BOATS^&Operational News&MANILA UNDER CONSTANT AIR ATTACK X EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY SHIFT BASE OF OPERATIONS TO SURABAYA JAVA X

@COMSUBSOWESPAC@^ASIATIC FLEET BOATS^&Operational News&EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY SHIFT BASE OF OPERATIONS TO PERTH FREMANTLE ON WESTERN AUSTRALIA X

there are actually messages concerning the base-transfer, but they don't appear ingame. The only difference seemed to be the header before the message, so i changed @COMSUBSOWESPAC@^ASIATIC FLEET BOATS^&Operational News to @CINCPAC@^...^&Pac News (a working header from another message)

and heres what i got:
http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/1593/basechangefix1rt6.jpg

EDIT: I'm a bit confused right now, i switched it back to the (what i think to be) original settings, and it's still working (better, actually, since it's now displaying the correct to- and from). Perhaps i made some mistake reversing the changes, unfortunately i didn't make a backup. Someone please do me a favor and post the original two lines.

We can only hope that the U.S. and the Allies will more publicly acknowledge Mexico's assistance during WW II.

Let us also never forget the day L. Ron Hubbard, then commanding a light subchaser based out of Oregon on its maiden voyage (to San Diego, for rebasing), fired on the Mexican island of Matagordo, causing a minor diplomatic brouhaha. Hubbard had floated several targets off the coast and had his crew fire on them for practice, the rounds crossing over sections of unoccupied beach in the process. Technically, Hubbard had fired on the sovereign soil of an American ally.

Hubbard had gotten lost on the way to San Diego and anchored off Matagordo thinking it was a US possession. This incident, combined with a previous screw-up just days before, cost Hubbard his combat command.

Even more amusing was the aforementioned previous incident.

Hubbard's sonarman detected what turned out to be a magnetic shoal. In classic "1941" war-scare fashion, Lt. Cmdr. Hubbard not only expended his supply of depth charges but reloaded twice from local munitions tenders, while also managing to call in several other coast-defense vessels and even a couple of blimps. During the three-day "battle" a small fleet with air support was thus engaged blasting the bejeezus out of absolutely nothing.

To the day he died, Hubbard maintained that he sank at least two Japanese subs during that battle, although his own immediate claims as noted in his captain's log show no clear evidence of such beyond a claimed "oil slick" that no one else in the mini-fleet saw. -:hmm:

Yeah. The game's campaign messages contain some very poor taste comments. The one about Mexico is among the worst. There's a similar one about China (which had been fighting the Japanese for years), another about the Aleutians, another about Elba and one about the RAF.

Then there are some plain weird ones: the Solomon islands are routinely misspelled, apparently a developer thinks Caen is Cannes - I never heard of a film festival in Caen. Then there's the 'liberate Florence' one, the 'Rumanian vampirism' one and the 'Go make a screenshot' one - just odd.

As the file was originally set up by the developers there were instances when the message would not show up (the message was set to terminate before the base changeover was to occur, so if a boat left the base after the message stopped the player would have no clue about the base change). Even when the message did get through all the 'change base' messages were listed as 'low priority' in the messages file (while messages about football teams were high priority). In fact the file has all the priorities reversed so it stops time compression for nonsense messages and fails to do so for messages of real importance.

In RFB I changed the file so that poor taste jokes are removed, base changes transmit until after the base change goes into effect (so that players always receive the message) and all the message priorities are correct. If people are interested in getting this file it's available at http://www.beerymod.com/SH4/messages.7z

Beery,

The game's messages are supposed to be internal stuff sent from US Navy higher authorities or Comsubpac to other US Navy units. They shouldn't care to be politically correct and respectfull to anyone - since that wouldn't be period.

Also, while some of the messages are perhaps a little weird, I don't think they are as bad as you make them be. Of course, its hard to look at them objectively.

It's not a question of political correctness. They just don't sound like the sort of messages I've seen from ComSubPac or official Navy communications to subs. They sound like the kinds of messages European computer game developers think Americans would send.

As for them being 'period' the following sound distinctly non-period:

"KANGAROOS BREATHE COLLECTIVE SIGH OF RELIEF"

"GERMAN BEER NOW NON GRATA DURING MARDI GRAS CELEBRATIONS"

"MYSTERIOUS OUTBREAK OF VAMPIRISM NOTED AMONG RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS"

And what admiral or Navy staff member would ever admit to not knowing where Elba is? I mean these guys are in the military so they have heard of Napoleon, right?

elanaiba

FWIW, it was an American that wrote those messages ;) and his CV includes US Army duty, Korea postings and the such.

Now, surely we could debate each and every message out there, but I took the Elba message more like a tongue in cheek fun of the war in Europe, so far away from the Pacific.

And frankly - I wouldn't expect 90% of the US Navy submarine force or my co-nationals of the period depicted to know where Elba is.

Now I won't claim to be an expert in the American mindset, but I don't find the following message very serious either:

"Another running gun battle today. Destroyer gunning, Wahoo running"

Then he has an awful way of making the messages sound like they were written by someone who had never served at high rank in the WW2 US Navy.

The guys sending those messages were highly educated men who most likely went to Annapolis Navy Academy. They would know geography and military history and they would not (in my opinion) send messages that made them seem like unschooled and xenophobic hicks.

But that's just my opinion. The good thing is, we can mod the file. I wish we could do the same for some other files.

Wow, lots to go through, its cool to see I have some fans and critics. I'll start with the easy one about Princess Elizabeth and her wartime service. I was asked to do a little humor and write the news items for the game, as well as a lot of other writing tasks in the last month of development (they were pretty short-handed). I just basically pulled up wiki's WW2 timeline and set to work. I made a pass through to grab either headlines relevant to the Pacific theatre, relevant to the war in general, or relevant for some humor. The rest were canned on the first pass (there was like 500 or so news items, reduced to about 200). So...for Liz...if you check out February 25th on the link below. I apologize for the innacuracy there, but I'm only as good as the source. I did this work in less than 2 days so didn't have time to fact check every statement.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ww2_timeline#1942

Based on a wonking 600-pager that was dropped on my lap to research the subject the weekend before, I found that humor was quite often a part of the radio messages, and most of them were far from politically correct. Sports scores were also bigger news than the real news, and subs would surface (sometimes in less than optimal conditions) just to grab the World Series snippets on the waves.

Yeah. The game's campaign messages contain some very poor taste comments. The one about Mexico is among the worst. There's a similar one about China (which had been fighting the Japanese for years), another about the Aleutians, another about Elba and one about the RAF.

With Mexico, I had other jokes that were in pretty poor taste, but I changed it at the last second and left it in the air. In hindsight I should have just left it a "serious" line only. In no way did I intend to demean Mexico's contribution to the war effort, just that like some other countries, they took their merry time in choosing sides.

As for the others, you need to look at the historical context. China didn't officially declare war (after a government reshuffle) until late in the game, even after a long-standing invasion. If you read the text on the China message it basically says as much. The RAF had launched several air raids previous to the message which did little damage to Berlin, but they finally got it right one day, hence the comment. The Aleutians invasion was taken seriously, but the Americans decided to just let them freeze up there until they could get to them...there were more important things to fight over at the time.

With Elba, you made the comment in another post about well-educated naval officers and what they would know. In the military I was in, it wasn't those officers that wrote the news or even edited it, it was a desk jockey somewhere (I was one of them). That is the point of view I was taking on these news items. And, in sharp contrast to today's military, there was a lot more "personality" showing through the cracks as evidenced by reading some of the more personal accounts of the war.

Solomon Islands...sorry, no spell check because they made me use Excel. Caen/Cannes reference was a clear joke, we have Google Earth here, we know things! Florence is like Elba, if you check the news list I was working with, there was a long string of island and city names that were liberated in that time frame, like 30 or 40, I made jokes with what I could, kept some others with big names, and canned the rest. Romanian vampirism was a snark at my Romanian colleagues, with the image in my head from Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 when he rattles of the "Coalition of the Willing" list and the vampire pops out from the grave when they say "Rooooooo-mania!". The "Go take a screenshot" comment...well, we'll just have to release an "Easter Egg Free" version next time for our "Serious Fan Base".

Part of the humor also came from the fact that I had just finished reading a marathon of Slaughterhouse 5, Catch-22, and Lolita as bathroom reading. All of them written at or near WW2 (early 50's I think). I'm so happy they finally got a good English section at the local mall bookstore here in Bucharest.

As far as priority comments, apparently some formatting didn't survive the merge. They had already written an "orders" type file, then I generated a news file (with the humor stuff) and another file with relevant messages for the campaign. All 3 were supposed to be merged but they had some wierd strings attached to the message to denote the "to and froms" and priority and frequency of broadcast, etc. They told me just hand the stuff in and it would be merged together, but I think some reformatting needed done that wasn't done in the end. I'll get Dan or Tudor to take a look-see about what happened, but no promises, and it was probably my fault somehow anyways.

And nobody has seen the ghost ship in the actual campaign?!?! Ya'll cheated with the editor...

My only regret is that they didn't put me on the project sooner. They were a great bunch of guys to work with and are really dedicated to the game and the fan base that supports them. The compressed production schedule was unfortunate, but to paraphrase Rumsfeld, "You make a game with the time you have, not the time you wish you had..."

It was a great task though they gave me, "Here, fix every piece of text in the game...and we need it in a week so we can get it to the translators. And generate some news headlines while you're at it..." And I was like, "Dude." And they were like, "Dude?" And so I said, "Dude!" And they said, "Marfa!", which I think means "Cool!" in Romanian, but it could also have something to do with grandmothers and dead goats. I never was too sure.

Its still amazing to me after 2 years in the business (after that 9 years in the Army previously mentioned) just how normal and human game production is. As a hard core gamer (all kinds of games from The Sims to X3) I always thought of devs as some kind of super humans. But now, now I've seen the light! My eyes are open! The truth is that we are actually gods, not just super humans. Now, mere mortals, bow down before us and...oops, where was I going with this? Oh yeah, as I was saying...normally this is just your everyday normal 9 to 6 job. Occaisionally we get to cut loose and we grab that 1% chance every time we get, so the fans get a little humor thrown in with their serious sims once in a while. Apologies for offending anyone, at least it wasn't the constant "American Pig Dog" commentary stuck in a sound loop from Blazing Angels 1...(Blazing Angels 2 will kick ass though, so pre-order it...you know you want to.:o )

If anyone wants some more trivia, I'm also the "passing thermal layer" voice. They added the thermal layer feature but had no way of adding a graphical element for it that late in production and no voicework after they had already done their order with the outside sound studio. I think I'm also the "sound general quarters" guy, even though I encouraged them to use an actual sample from the National Archives (amazing what you can find on-line).

Anyways, thanks again. Normally we don't have enough time for our 30 or so smoke breaks as required by Romanian labor laws, let alone enough time to post long commentaries, but as I said when we get that 1% chance we take it.

Godspeed and all that,

Will

Shoot, when I was in Iraq with the 1st Infantry back in 2004 I'd hear off-color humor (stuff you'd not want broadcasted on CNN ) all the time on the radio, so it's nothing out of the ordinary nor something that's somehow completely died away. It's just part of serving in a war zone and a way to "let off some excess steam." Thus, as a currently serving solider I find the remarks in the game to fit in quite well.

Not so John for if "Battle Stations" were called there would have been twice the amount of noise as this is again another bug that may be corrected with the 1.3 patch hopefully. In real life if at "silent running" and the "Boatswains Pipe" and the BMOW's ( Boatswain's Mate On Watch ) loud voice were heard he would be slapped in the brig so fast it would make your head swim. And then written up for Court Marshall ( if he didn't see Davey Jones first :hmm: ). Although in SH4 they call him the WO....oh well.

I've had this same type of scenario where I was being hunted by the "infamous" DD's and with a crew that was in top condition there was no need to call "Battle Stations" as they took care of the boat very well even when that idiot called "Relieve the Watch". But being a bug as far as loudness goes I don't believe in the sim that the AI even hears it at all.

I'm really glad that it worked out that way. I like the audio notification. Sometimes in the heat of battle I would not always think to go and 'check a chart' to see where the layer is. But in a hurry to dive from escorts searching for me, it's cool to suddenly have a crewman point out "hey, we just passed the layer".

Not only do I get a dynamic notification that I can stop diving there, but it's another aspect of the game that makes you feel like your not alone in the sub.

Actually, I thought the thermal layer was to be used as part of your defense against the enemy being able to ping you...didn't real sub commanders use that in WW2?...I have dove up to 80 feet or more past the layer to try to confuse the enemy, as well as zigzag, silent running and launching decoys and not sunk...maybe I was just lucky???? It is. Although I think not quite so much for pinging as passive hydrophone. Maybe the same for both, but not quite sure. Either way, traveling just below the layer will definately make you more difficult to hear/locate as the temperature differential distorts the angle of sound waves (speed travel, actually).

" And I was like, "Dude." And they were like, "Dude?" And so I said, "Dude!" And they said, "Marfa!", which I think means "Cool!" in Romanian, but it could also have something to do with grandmothers and dead goats. I never was too sure.

In Romanian Marfa means merchandise, goods to be sold in a shop. Also, "marfa" is colloquially used to describe something as being of top quality, like in "that new mod from Captain Cox is marfa". :know:

"Engine room con"
"Con engine room aye"
"er, con we have a resenance cascade in progress down here in diesel no.2"

"Freeman! Get down there and see what you can do. We're short on pistols so here's a crow bar."

I didn't grab a screen shot, but when my Bridge watch officer is facing away from me, there are very faint signatures written on his back. I'm guessing that Dan's and Mihai's are there. :D
