All accolades to SHIV,, it is a visual masterpiece, I look on in awe at its graphic abilities.
I do not in any way denounce SHIV in any way, it is spectacular, and to those who enjoy the pacific war, I am sure a great gift. This is not an us vs them, Both groups have won BIG with UBI.
But for my pure fun,, enjoyment,, playability, and enjoyment of subject....
SHIII, and U-boats is the life for me.
One day I may be the only person in this forum (unless Silent hunter VIIC)
but I will stick with the U-boats,, the increassing lack of survivability as time goes,
the big convoys, , The contest is on each time you leave port, no longer a goal of tonnage, but of just survivability. the reward of returning alive,,,,,, another patrol.
My two cents worth.

It is too good, and I think SH4 will even bring some new players to it. SH3 has an advantage of being a thoroughly tested and de-bugged game with detailed answers to most any question. It will take SH4 a couple of years to get were 3 is now. SH4 is still a child; SH3 is an adult.
Oddly enough, the SH3 forum has picked up a new life since SHIV came out.

Well there is always a lot of hype over a new game and a lot of ppl were waiting solely for SH4 to come out
Treading water
Now its out and buggy ppl have wandered back to SH3
I expect that will continue for a while too
After the fourth or fifth SH4 patch things might change as the game should be as complete as it will ever be
The mod scene in 4 is already going but until all patches are done its no point doing major things as the patches will always change files
I am staying here anyway as uboats are my passion
Am getting SH4 tomorrow though as it seems models can be imported from SH4 into SH3 so at least I will own the game to be able to do that
And again another SH3 vs SH4 thread....
Here's my advice for all new readers that have not seen previous discussions.
1.- If you have the money for both, get BOTH. None will dissapoint you.
2.- If you have to choose, choose based on the theater/side your prefer to fight, not based on fancy graphics/latest effects/bla bla bla
Happy hunting all:ping:

I think that was exactly the point the OP was making. Calm down. ;)
I've put down SH3 for the time being and am playing SH4. The Pacific theatre is very interesting but something about the U-boats appeals more to me. I know I'll be back to SH3...especially if Ubisoft releases a SDK. Think of the possabilities!

Both :yep:
Now SH is complete, 3 and 4 are for me a whole game, perhaps sh4 as a expansion.
there are graphic and gameplay differences but the game and files are very similar and cover now the submarine war during wwII in all theaters.
also there isnīt any problem have the two installed in my system at the same time.
i donīt play sh4 yet because i have hardware issues and is still full of bugs, but with the time, when fixed and modded it could be a must have simulator.
Hi,
I am still waiting for my copy of SH4 to arrive;
But even after 2 years i play SH3 with the same intensity; This game will stay on my drive. How lucky we are ? Two theaters of operation the Pacific and the Atlantic.
I will be playing them both:D

Merging GWX into SH4 would be the ultimate dream come true, Until then I will be playing both side by side.

Ok, here's my 2 cents :yep:
I bought SH3 when it came, play awhile and returned back to IL-2 series. Then read about GWX and now I'm back playing SH3+GWX.
I bought SH4 but my rig need more power to play it smoothly...:damn:
And when I got run SH4 smoothly it could play SoW:BoB too...I hope :hmm:
I think that was exactly the point the OP was making. Calm down.
OK apologizes to USS Sea Tiger if I misunderstood the post :88)

I like having both SHIII, and SHIV. As to which I prefer, it depends on which side I want to sail on that particular day.
As for the quirks, I've had no ctds, or lockups after 24 hours of game play. The minor issues with the odd quirk here and there will get sorted out, so I don't worry about it myself.
Just the fact of having both the U-Boats, and the U.S. Navy subs now is great to me personally. And after 10 plus years, I've been able to retire SHI and give it the rest it deserves.
So for now, I'm goooooooood.......

The very fact that I'm still playing SHIII is because of GWX and the other mods I'm using, and this forum.
I really dont have too much interest in SHIV for reasons I've stated in other threads - so it's SHIII for meeeee:up:

U-boats all the way for me, Pacific just doesn't excite me that much (I can feel the flames rising ;)). However, no doubt in time I'll buy SH4 anyway.
Same thing happened with Il2, bought everything as it came out even though Pacific Fighters was not where it's at for me. Never regretted a penny spent (even on the computer upgrades).
Oh, and as discussed above GWX makes all the difference to SH3 and it's lasting power so many thanks to the unpaid GWX guys.

SHIV brought me over to SHIII. I'm sticking with 3 until I've had my fill then I'll eventually move over to IV> I have to say though, 3 is incredible. Though the graphics may not be as good as IV, they are unbelievable. Just in general this game rocks and I'm so glad I found it. I'm not normally a patient person who is into hardcore simming, but something about the subs, the hunting, and the successful hits are so satisfying. Its like someone on my sub says when a torpedo successfully hits a target, "YES!". Details like that are so neat :D

I too will be sticking with SH3 for the time being, SH4 has the potential to be a mental sim, but at the moment its just too buggy for me to enjoy. My PC isn't exactly up to the task of running it either, I get about 60fps in SH3 and only 30 MAX normally mid 20's, if theres a large TF with an air attack going on it slows to bout 6 or 7 its rediculous.
I just got off the phone and sad to say this my mate bought SH4 and hated it on these grounds no real realism and to much arcade, he has destroyed the disk. I would like to add he has money and this is not the first game to be on the receiving end of a hammer. Stock SH3 got the same treatment but when I showed him GWX he bought the game again to run GWX.
As for me I have decided to wait for the price of SH4 to go down and hopefully a lot of in game bugs will be sorted out by then.

You can have my copy cheaper than an easter turkey ;)
I too returned to SH3 within a day. All SH4 did was reawaken my love for SH3 :)
Reinstalled it with GSX and man I couldn't help but smile as my boat rolled out of port into the cold North Atlantic. AND, there is something about the apocolyptic feel that SH3 has. You know things are going to go badly in the end. Like someone said here before. It is more a game of survival then tonnage.

Your friend has anger management issues.:yep:
Though having played it, I can't believe how many little faults are in it. Like, when you surface, even though you have been underwater for just 10 minutes, your Dive Officer tells you that you are out of air and need to surface?! huh!?
1/3 on the telegraph comes out verbally as ahead slow. Probably the most stupid thing of all, is the depth selector is in METERS!!! I thought it was feet! So when I set supposedly for 100 feet and found it was in fact meters and then getting crushed, well... you can guess what a typical dumb blonde I felt then!
The HUD is too big, its not as simple to get to grips with as SH3's was, SH4 has a much bigger learning curve in my view. Also it would help if the museum there told you how deep the subs could go in terms of their operational depth.
I am a new subsimmer....if that is a work....I have been playing SH3+GWX1.03+SH3Commander now for about 6 weeks. I am so glad I got into this late in the game. I have reaped the benefits of so many modders and folks who have worked so hard to make SH3 a great experience.
SH4 arrived at the house yesterday, I did not even open the box its will sit for awhile and simmer.......as the process begins anew.
Again, great community and great support. I think SH4 will become a great addition to the series. I few teething problems sure it happens. Just think a year from now....Pacific Theater or Atlantic so much to do and so little time.

Not wishing to embarass or come across as being pedantic :nope: .....but don't you mean GWX v1.02 :hmm:
The beta testers have only had it (v1.03) for between 4 and 5 weeks :yep:

Far from it he's so cool I am surprised he dose not get frost bite. The thing is wanted is realism and he just did not get it.
Big graphics don't make a great game you need the balance of the two, well once the mod guys get there teeth in to it and give us real realism then he will buy it again.

Not, graphics donīt make a great game, and more when the same graphics and engine are bugged and the visual difference donīt justify this huge FPS hit.
A great game is a correct balance between eye candy and game play features with a reasonable hardware requeriments using and optimized engine, a lot of people repport that moving sh4 slides donīt help any difference in FPS improvement.
Sh4 donīt need a tune up, it needs to be finished using patches and it could need a lot of work.
I hope that dev team donīt have a limited number of scheduled patches like sh3
To paraphrase Clay Blair(Hitler's U-Boat War)In contrast to the strategic sucess of our(US)submarine force vs Japan the German force failed versus the Allies in the Atlantic. It was a bitter, painful srruggle for both sides,"the most prolonged & arduous naval campaign in all history"Although the US submarine victory over Japan was no "cake walk" it does not compare with the epic struggle of the German u-boat service against the Allies(my words)especially in the latter years of the war.A certain mystique has built up about the German Armed Forces esp the u-boat service, why you ask? In my humble opinion it was the sheer guts of the crews who fought on until the war's end,in spite of horrendous casulties & against an overwheming Allied force.Just my thoughts:up:Cody
I dare to point out that the question is being asked on an SHIII forum :p
With my meagre play and tweaking hours that I have these days, I can only afford to play SHIV. All in all, it's already worth playing though nowhere near the state where SHIII has been brought after extensive modding.

I actually bought it a couple of days ago and haven't taken off the cellophane yet. I'll sink all the ships in the Atlantic first and then head east. Or west depending on where exactly I am. Near Brazil I go west, near Cape town I go east. I think:hmm:

In all honesty? I'm glad SH 4 was released.
Is it right now as good as SH 3 is? no. But then again, SH 3 has had two years of developer support (the patches) and the massive work by the modding community (hell yeah!) to make it what it is now.
Right now am I playing more SH 3 than SH 4? yes because my computer gets 20-30 FPS in SH 4, and 60-70+ in SH 3. I need more RAM.
If you're looking for a complete game thats stable as a rock right now, go with SH3.
