...if you were in my sailor boots (apart from wrinkle your nose:o)?
Situation: 52nm off east coast of England, near Hartlepool. I'm near the edge of the minefield (at least, I HOPE it's the edge:huh:), as I know from a minor encounter with one of the mines - luckily I was too deep for it to do any serious damage. There is a large convoy on it's way, been tracking it since it came out of the Channel. It will be at my position in around 4 hours if everything goes right. The water is pretty deep here, but the weather is just too good - and daylight has just broken (jun 17th, 1940).
That means I will have to attack submerged - but how to avoid the #### mines??? Or should I withdraw and try to time a night surface attack?
Or give up this convoy, and go find some action N of Ireland?

What would you do?

Its heading out to sea? Why cant you just track it for another day or two untill it is clear of the minefield?

try to follow it on the surface untill its out of the minefield
but stay out of the DD's views
stay as far away as you can and still keep a visual

If water is deep there won't be mines there (I hope)

If you have a Monkey onboard, ask it if their are any minefields in the area :rotfl:

In daylight, you can use your obs.scope to scan for mines in front of your submerged sub....just raise it a little, enough to pop the head up.
Downside is, that you'll have to travel extremely slow, to have some time to react.
But I've travelled straight through a minefield this way...and will never do it again, lol.
After a having passed a few mines, I started feeling pretty stupid, but I had to continue, as I didn't dare to turn and withdraw.
Well, we made it, but picked a different way out after our job was done.

If you are using GWX then there are dolphins in the mod.
Dolphins have been trained by the USA for anti-mine operations.

See where I'm going?

1) Find a Dolphin
2) train it
3) profit.

Head for the north channel between scotland and ireland. Any convoy I ever met on the east coast of england consisted of tramp steamers and small merchies. Not worth the hassle of being hunted in shallow water for 2000 tons:nope:

Unfortunately, that is not the case. In SH3/GWX, mines are not restricted to shallow waters - guess they would be in real life.

Thanks to all for input - and I AM using the obs scope to check for mines. Unfortunately, that means TC=1...

OK, my plan is as follows: At 60m, enter a slow 360 degr circle at my present position. If I spot no mines here, I'll keep that up until I get a fix on the convoy. Then I'll surface and position myself, hoping to avoid airplanes. Then dive to 20 m and wait for the convoy, keeping an eye out for mines.
As for the getaway - I hope to be able to avoid both mines and DD's by going deep.

Wish me luck!

I'd let it go as you don't know exactly where the mines are. But I'm a very conservative Kaleun.

Oh, yes I do... Unfortunately, the way to find them is a bit... let's say "risky"...:o

And, jim: I had more than 100m under the keel, when I 'found'(!) the first one...

But in the end, it all came to - nothing!
The convoy never showed up (at least not within my hearing range), so I can only assume they went to Hartlepool:damn:

- What a waste of time -

So now I'm on my way to the fat hunting grounds... Oh, and I came across a large tanker on my way there - it helps a bit!
