View Full Version : Constant Air Attacks
I'm on my second career patrol just out of Midway on my way to Honshu and I'm under constant air attack. I've been attacked so many times, I'm now out of ammo for the AA guns, so my only option is to dive whenever planes show up. Anybody have any ideas about how to get out of this mess? My batteries are about drained, but I can only stay on the surface about 30 min before I'm attacked again. I'm thinking I should just submerge, shut the engines down and sit out the daylight hours (with max time compression), then try crusing on the surface at night. I don't know how long the batteries will hold out though, with no engine. Also, I don't know how bad the CO2 will get. These attacks are a PITA though.

Luckily, the batteries magically recharge themselves in this game with no diesel left. So that shouldn't be a problem...
Hah, ok. Magical batteries are good then. Turns out, that tactic I suggested worked. I had just enough battery and O2 to stay under at 1/3 speed during daylight hours then bolted at night.

You can edit the Airstrike.cfg to edit the amount of strikes.
Right now if you are detected by anything it is set at 40% chance of airstrikes.
And if you send raidio messages 30% airstrike.
The default setting with no modifiers is 10%
Thanks Malkuth. I'm finding the default level a bit heavy for my taste.

How can you tell how much O2 you have left?
I have been driving one of the S-Boats around Manila, and yeah, under constant air attack, too. Anyway, I'm trying to sit out the daylight, but periodically get the message "Run out of oxygen, we need to surface the boat!"
Thing is, the store gauges are all fine. Diesel (of course), plenty of kick left in the battery, 'compressed O2' (isn't that just used for blowing tanks?) still topped off, and while the CO2 is certainly up there, it's not even 1/4 of the way up the bar. What tells me I'm running out of air? (Now, if the CO2 gauge is actually measuring the REAL CO2 level instead of the proportion to lethal levels...then yeah, I can see that. Air with a 25% CO2 component will be...difficult...to breath.)

I don't know if this is the case, but it seems they have implemented scripted air patrols that last forever. Unending air waypoints?

I'm not so sure! I thought this at first, but I'm using 1.1 and I have noticed that air attacks are not as numerous as before. I'm in the Guardfish off of Guam and the only time I ran into air was around Wake Island. I hit a storm after Wake that lasted for three days and though I was hesitant to stay on the surface during the day, no air bothered me! I wonder, and hope, weather plays a factor in air attacks. It sure seemed like it. Surprisingly, after I inserted an agent off of Guam, not only did air come up but a destroyer did as well. Though the insertion was during the day, I was a safe distance away and I picked them up in the area I had been via RADAR. Air seems a little more random with version 1.1 Maybe I'm just reading into it!

I have see that also. If you click on the CO2 at the bottom of the screen you will see the bar move over a period of time. Just a thought, maybe silent running keeps the crew quiet and using less O2? I really do not know:hmm: . Certainly they could stay down a long time with air scubbers and such.

Another anoying thing. When You USE the AA gun in Gar or The other fleet boats of 1941 its hard to aim with the dam thing. If you try to find the Plane the Bulkheads block your view. (the AA gun is inside the conning tower back end) It makes it almost impossible to manually attack Planes with this problem. One spot is worse then others, and of course the planes always come from that area.
I'm having the same problem here. Out of Pearl Harbour patrol to Honshu(start of war), I've been constatly getting hit or having to crash dive to avoid aircraft. What i can't figure out is how they are finding me at night if i send no radio updates . Do Japanese aircraft have radar this early in war to find me in the pitch black? So far this seems pretty unrealistic, unless ofcourse the Japanese are homing in on my radio Playing the CBS radio Mod .;)

I could be wrong, but I think that running your radar increases the chances of air attack. Even early in the war, they could home in on radio and radar transmissions. If one aircraft locates you, he would most certainly tell his buddies. Try making a drastic course change after the aircraft is out of sight, and run in that direction for a couple hours. This might throw the other aircraft off. I think the message about being out of o2 is a bug. I have gotten it several times right after surfacing, even if I have not been down that long.

By looking at the Airstrike.cfg I don't think the aircraft are dynamic like boats. Their are modifiers that skript them in if certain variables match. hence the reason they always find you, they are scripted in.
I played again and they are still just as bad even with some changes I made to the file. I will try again though see what happens.

That may be so, but I can't figure out how to turn off the radar (or turn it on - it just *is* on)
