Can anyone advise? I think I'm using a Porpoise class now.

Pearl harbor:
1941

Tambor or Gar class Boats

1942

Gato class boats

late 1943, early 1944...not sure on these dates, 1944 should have them.

baleo class boats

EDIT: if out of Manilla, i have no idea!

I'd almost say porpoise cause in my game its like the only ship that has the torpedo tracking and gyro angle in the attack map, (manual settings OFF)

I like the Porpoise.

I'm doing Porpoise only because I want to receive promotions to bigger and better boats through my performances. It's more gratifying I think :p

Eh, I'd love to start a career in an S-Class boat though :D

I'd go with Gato, or Salmon (but I honestly know less about American WWII subs than I do about the German WWII uboats).

There are more types, and the names don't really give any indication as to which is newer or better. At least a Type IIB is easy to identify as being a lesser sub than a Type VIIC. Those are good names and easy to understand.

When it comes to American subs, I don't know what the difference is, and theres nothing about in the game to give a brief description either!

I recommend the following link on the Fleet Submarine website. It lists all US subs and has a quick link for each class that lists basic specs for each sub class. The link is: http://www.fleetsubmarine.com/sublist.html

A basic listing of the sub classes in the game (ranked in order from earliest commission date to latest commission date) is:

S-class (1920) 4 Bow Torpedo Tubes
P-class (Porpoise Class) (1935) 4 Bow TT / 2 Aft TT
Salmon class (1937) 4 Bow TT / 4 Aft TT
Sargo class (1939) 4 Bow TT / 4 Aft TT
Tambor class (1940) 6 Bow TT / 4 Aft TT
Gar class (1941) 6 Bow TT / 4 Aft TT
Gato class (1941) 6 Bow TT / 4 Aft TT
Balao class (1943) 6 Bow TT / 4 Aft TT

As for the best US sub I vote for the Balao class because it was the deepest diving and newest sub class built in the war. I am sure each skipper will have a favorite to play in this simulation so pick the one you like and enjoy!

I'd love to be able to start a career with the S-class.

Start in a Gato, 1944. Your torpedo problems are mostly solved by then, you have decent radar etc.

You can try other boats, years, etc. after you have a feel for how the world works in SH4.

I'd say, start with any of them. They all have thier own flavor of play I should think. Me personally, I think I want to try to start from an S-boat and work may way up. Hopefully bye next week my computer will allow me the chance to play when those parts arrive.

I started my career in Manilla-41 with an Sargo class,
but it looks more like an Salmon class.:hmm:
Donīt really know the difference between Porpoise, Salmon and Sargo.
They all look alike to me!

But the Sargo works so far.:rock:

I dont think you can work your way up in career...its supposed to be realistic career lenth and you wont get ehough patrols to buy new subs.

It seems you start the career with what you want, its not like sh3.

Is there any way to undone that like in SH 3 unlimited career?

If you edit that files that dictate how long a stop at a base is then you can extend the time a bit.

IN the basic.cfg file there is a bit that looks like this

[TIME]
TransferFlotilla=1
NbDaysInBase=28 << Make that 1 day
NbPatrolsInFlotilla=3
NbMonthsInFlotilla=6

Not sure what the others do

I dont know if modders will be able to beyond what Ping of Death says, would be nice if the devs added more options when starting a career.

1. Such as realistic carreer lenth on/off
even then you may be stuck with the sub you choose for that career, I havent played enough career to be sure if you can "buy" a new sub or not

2. being able to specify exact realizm settings like sh3.
some areas I want hard settings some areas I want easy settings, at the moment they seem fixed at Easy, Medium and Hard.

You can customize the settings to whatever you want at the start of your career, and I would imagine that you can change them to whatever you want at the start of each patrol.. just like SH3. All you have to do is click on the Books on bookshelf that are to the left of your desk in the Office where you start your Career/Patrols. There are two clickable sets of books on the bookshelf, use the set that has tooltip labeled 'Options'(or something like that).

Thanks for that, I havent looked in that room much yet it runs at 7fps (worse than the bridge in pearl harbour) so I have just been clicking start mission.

I have to read my manual soon tho, I cant see where to spot flooding in my boat :)
Im sure that will help

I dont understand the post which claims that you wont make enough Renown in a patrol to buy a new sub. Me myself, for instance, started in 1941 in a Sargo class in the Atlantic Fleet (Manilla). When you go from Manilla to the North, you'll come across A LOT of traffic (I encountered three Task Forces in a row, one with Mogami CAx4 as biggest ship, the second had Takao CAx2 plus Mogami CAx4 and the third Kongo BBx2 :)) Just attack those biggies :)

Go in at 90 degrees angle on bow and kill them.
Retreat.
Develop your skills, lose the escorts.
When you run out of torpedos, return to the nearest base, dock and resupply (this requires no long 'loading' screen, you just receive new fuel and torps instantly). And, ofcourse, with the new supplies a new opportunity arrises :D
Continue until you've killed the entire IJN :P

I mentioned that I hadnt played enough to be sure, its not that I think you wont get enough renown from playing, its just that I thought you might not be able to get a new sub with renown.
My thinking is you get the sub at the start of a career and you keep it since careers are limited in lenth anyway. With historical careers you wouldnt be gettign a new sub, you would be assigned one mabe.
I could well be wrong, but its not much of a problem for me anyway as I just make a career for the sub I want anyway

If you do spend renown to get a sub and then your career ends 2 patrols later your going to feel bad about spending the renown imo
