View Full Version : Evaluation Of SH4
High Command

I Appology the Spelling Errors, English i speak great, but write very poor, (is my 3rd language).
A Few comments from me.
I think its at this time a poor game, but with great potential.
It reminds about the early release of SH III, who also originaly semed to be a
"runn out of developing money type of release" --- Then Fixed some throu Patches, then - A Major Unoficial huge expation by the great great -- GWX Team (Gray Wolfs Expation) -- Who made the game good.
Now alot of new fetures, but aigan, poor manual, alot of buggs, generaly a unrealistic experience (3 Ships in port at Pearl Harbour 9 Dec type of things...)
I would expected to see them all there, including the Arizona on the botton of the sea ect ect...
The Navel Academy dont go throu using the Manual System at all, just lock on and fire, -- has nothing to do with sub sim, thats sub play...
The game has GREAT POTENTIAL to become a good game, after the buggs are sorted out, and somone make a mod like the GWX --- Who dont have a budget to ceap, and no restrictions for it to fit to "all user types" ect ect...
If you want a realistic Sub Sim experience, i would recommend you to not buy this game at this time, but to stand by for a few months, to the buggs are fixed, and to somone have made a mod fitted for users who want realism.
If your the "action" type of player, then this will do as good as any other...
My two cents,
A few discoveryes...
Pearl Harbour has 3 ships only in port?
Manilla 3 ships only in port?
Buggs on Manual Target system
Dive Sequence poorly moddeled, (Few effects, sounds ect)
Emergancy situations poorly moddeled (Few effects, sounds ect)
Radio tuned to radio stations has very few brodcasts
WO Hardly ever report contacts in any other form then text
RO Hardly ever report contacts in any other form then text
SO Hardly ever report contacts in any other form then text
CE Do not give verbal damage reports
Very few ship crew voice recordings
Bugg on surfecing secuence (No oxigen reserve reported upon surfesing)
HK6 Mavis Abnormal Manuvering (Over extend aircraft limitations and preformance)
Enamy ships starts as defult same time as you in fraindly port (Espesialy at Java)
Clock Error for Torpedo runn time
Mission Objective error (On Patrol Objectives)
Damage controll Bugg
Enamy aircrafts has unlimited ammo?
Radio Report and Comunication buggs
Mouse movement lagg?
Crash when using Range equicment, if no ship is scelected in Ship Manual
Torpedo abnormal behavure in shallow waters
AA Gunn reload bugg
Sound Loop Error, when wiev is at surfese, after torpedo Attack
Tested on 2 systems:
2 GB DDR2 Memory
256 Grafic PCI Express
3.2 GHZ HT/DM

Get the patch :D

The Evaluation is done with the patch, and that a game gets a patch on its first day after release, shows it should not been released... Is the Budget out, and more money needed for future development and fixing maby?
This is currently a game with great potential to become a simulation.
I agree with your observations.
So little has been done in parallel with SHIII. The torpedoes selection is lacking.
Damage control doesn't seem to work for me in my game. Sat at the botom at 32 ft zero propulsion and tried to have crew fix engine / propeller shaft / rudder transmission... no dice and nor progress.... The convoy above just sailed awa an I was stuck going the wrong way with no measurable speed...
The game continues to cause my mouse to lag and jump and freeze. My spec's should bee ok with an AMD 64 2 GB memory, lots of virtual on a 500GB HD with less than 15 GB in use... Video is a NVIDIA 5700 with 256MB... is the video card the culprit.. using a MS Intellimouse Optical..
Just seems this game was made only for the cream of gammers and I thought I had a decent system..
I agree it's a great base system to have the modders fix /tewak / repair...
Why did UBI decide to change so much... SONAR operators used passive DF on US subs..
Just gripes me that H doesn't go to sonar station, A doesn't check dive or ascent, you have no sense of your Periscopes distance above the waterline, etc etc.
Guess I'll be checking for a new video card... Anybody got a list of the cards that are good for this game?:shifty:
I've only had this game for 24H but some of those observations are clearly wrong.
The Navel Academy dont go throu using the Manual System at all, just lock on and fire, It was the same thing in SH3, and as much as I liked to have it in a in-game tutorial it's just to much information. Read the manual, it's there.
Pearl Harbour has 3 ships only in port? There's more than three, though it's not as chaotic as it should.
WO Hardly ever report contacts in any other form then text
RO Hardly ever report contacts in any other form then text
SO Hardly ever report contacts in any other form then text Wrong, everything that comes in text comes in sound. Maybe your using too high TC?
CE Do not give verbal damage reports Wrong again..I've seen tons of it. Here is some examples of what I've heard:
Pressure Hull damaged!
We have flooding sir!
Radar damaged!
Radar repaired Sir!
Electric Engine ready!
That and much more.
Mission Objective error (On Patrol Objectives) If your talking about "Patrol off X" objectives, you'll have to patrol in that area until that yellow icon turns grey.
Enamy aircrafts has unlimited ammo? No I don't think they have. For example B5N(or is it Betty?) drops two bombs at every run and has a total of two runs, then it returns back to base.

B5N Would be the Kate (Carrier Based Torpedo Bomber)
And the Betty is the G4M and the Nell is the G3M... and all of the above has a defult load out of 1X 18 Inch Torpedo...
I think your refering to the Mavis, thats the H6K and later the H6K4...
Who in the game has unhumenly manuverbilety, in realety, it could manuvere worse then a B29. (Not to mantion that the Corwstrings had a tendensy to jam at higher AoA).
The WO does readout info, but it semes to be less then 10% of all the messages thair is to report.
The Damage controll semes not fully operationell...
The SHip traffic at Pearl... well its 5 ships to be exact, in realety it was 107, and huge oil fields from burning ships, and a few BB's with heavy listing, alot of Tug Boats and DD's, as well as Repair and Fire Controll Ships ect in servise to get the controll over the mess... not to mantion the massive Airforces that evacuated key personell from Pearl and back to the main land... And the over 200 P40 Warhawks that was transfered to Pearl, for constand Low Leavel CAP above the harbour... Not to mantion the baloons and smaller air ships, that was raised to disrupt a potential 2nd day of attack...
If you look in the game, Pearl Harbour looks like a tiny tiny little port, on a hot pecefull summerday...
Its lacking in more then a few leavels... but aigan, It is a poor platform like SH III orginaly was, BUT it can be MODDED and when so, it will stop being a poor game, and become a good simulation...

It has some annoyances, that's for sure. What does UBI contract for? 3 or 4 patches max? Hopefully they fix some of the obvious errors and they ones that they don't....hopefully they get mod-fixed.

Hi, High Command,
I understand your point but I see it a little differently. I knew that the Devs were still working on improving the game even after it had gone gold, and that because of the imposed release deadline by Ubisoft, those improvements had to come in the form of an initial patch.
So, for me, the game released with the 1.1 patch and I've judged it based on that. I currently give it a 7 out of 10, and I predict that with a couple of additional patches and some modding, it'll be a 9.5 game within 6 months.

i hope so
sh3 only have until 1.4b , if not, could remain a lot of bugs and glitches
Yep the game does have alot of bugs to sort out.... Ive seen all sorts of things from Ghost crew to zombie crew, Crew not following dive orders, lots of graphical glitches, rare frame rate issues and even people on the docks walking off into the sky :o
But i look forward to patch 1.2. The second they fix the resolution and a few minor bugs in 1.2 is when i will really start to enjoy the game

:o Ghost crew and zombies! People walking in the sky! No way I'm playing SHIV right now, too scary!

While I agree that it would be nice to have the entire situation replicated it really isn't feasible using today's technology with this game.
Do you realize that all of the ship models have a high poly count? Add in all of the particle effects in a small area and and the AI path finding for the aircraft and I seriously doubt it would run on any hardware configuration out there today.
Perhaps in 10-15 years we'll have that kind of technology available.
`just my .02 cents

Tecnology, yes of course...
Well, maby Less Grafics, and more gameplay and realism?
The GWX Makes good balance i think...
Its a good system thay have made, and exelent grafics, but its hugely lacking in all other areas, i would realy hope somone with the time and resourses, would like to make something like the GWX on it...
That would then be exelent ...

I certainly won't claim SH4 isn't bugged but I am really enjoying it. I think you have to be realistic about what can be included and what can't in the initial release. In my career starting from Pearl I didn't count the amount of ships in port but it was probably 10-15 (There were 2 or 3 carriers, a battleship, a few dd's, possibly a CA or 2 and a handful of merchants) My frame rates were down to 15-20 with all details maxed and I reckon they got it about right. I certainly wouldn't want 107 ships there to bring my pc to a halt!
There's a game called 'War in the Pacific' which is a very detailed 2d wargame of the pacific war.. and people argue all the time about whether this or that should be at this or that location. If a 2d wargame can't get everything right I certainly don't expect a submarine sim to be 100% historically accurate on things such as the handling of aircraft.. although I agree it would be great if it was!
Midway, for instance has a carrier docked in the first few days of the war.. I don't think it's port was anywhere near big enough to dock such a capital ship.. If memory serves the carriers have devastators and dauntlesses on board which I don't think they had until later in the war.. On return from my 1st patrol from Pearl I saw a big US taskforce containing (amongst other things) 4 BB's when I think only 1 BB was shipshape after Pearl was bombed.. but such is life. I remember in SH3 when it was released there were no ships in friendly harbours at all.. now we have them.. maybe not enough for some people, but they are there. When SH3 was released people moaned that the campaign was always patrol this or that area.. with no special missions.. now we have photo recon, agent insertion, pilot rescue, etc.. We have the radio with updates on the war, which was only put into SH3 as a mod. We can tune it too.. which I think is a great feature!
When I think about the original SH3 and what GWX and other mods did for it I am very excited about the future of SH4! There are bugs and lack of features which in some ways seems like a backward step from SH3 but overall I'm finding it a very immersive and beautiful sim. I just had the time of my life getting a agent onto the coast near Osaka. Surfacing my sub under the moonlight and carefully scanning the horizon for all the contacts I'd picked up during the day when I'd remained submerged in the deepest waters I could find near the coast. For all it's faults I'm having a great time! :)
poor manual
The printed manual is definitely an example of "produce anything by publish date". I've looked it over very carefully and I am very surprised at the poor pedagogical sense with which it has been designed. Over and over again, I can see that the absolute newb would be quite puzzled in the search for "help" in this manual. I find myself greatly relieved that I happen to already know the important stuff from my experience with SH3. Soon I'll be teaching a friend how to play SH4, and I can see that I will need to warn him to just read the manual with the most casual eye.
Dive Sequence poorly moddeled, (Few effects, sounds ect)
I agree that the dive sequence is poorly modeled for "action" style, but my greater concern right now is that the physics of the dive are actually incorrect. More than once I have issued the command to dive while simultaneously asking for full ahead, and the sub has careened to unheard of depths (and its death) with no recovery actions responsive. That is to say, when I manually select a depth I want in this condition of dive+flank -- and I reduce speed, call out a reasonable depth to trim out and a depth which I have not yet passed so that the vertical recovery to trim can be smooth. Yet ... nope ... she just keeps on plumetting to the floor. This is certainly not behavior i experienced (ever) in SH3.
