View Full Version : Can't let my men crew the deck gun?

After the 1st mission I upgraded my sub with a 4.5" deck gun, on the bow. It works fine (although the sub pic on the crew screen still shows the deck gun BEHIND the conning tower...) but I can't order my men to man the gun. I can use it myself just fine and crewing the gun worked just fine with the old gun. Crewing the new flak gun works also, but my men don't seem to like the new deck gun... Another bug?

you have crew in the deck gun positions in the crew page ? then it should work mine did in 1.0 and 1.1 ..

Though when the sea was rolling I was on the gun and as a wave washed over me, is was teleported to the control room, each time I went back onto the gun when a wave came I was back in the CR:lol:

The problem is that I can't assign crew to the deck gun on the crew page. There are no "open slots" to drag crewmen into.

can you not just drag a crew member down to the deck gun placement? you should be able to drag crew anywhere.

I see you have the gun crew icon green, I don't know if this will help, but turn it off and see if you can then drag some crew into the position.

No, I can't drag a crew member into the dark grey area for the deck guns. Believe me, I tried. :yep:

Also, I have tried dragging crew with or without the order to man the guns (the green light) active, still no success.

Also, you can see the "slots" for the repair crew and the Flak. But the deck gun doesn't even have those empty slots anymore. Strange.

Well, after the last patrol I got me my old deck gun (behind the conning tower) back, to see what would happen: still can't drag crew to man it.

Only thing again I can think of is the area is grey because as I can see in the screenshot you have the deck gun icon ON=Green, have you tried switching it off and then moving the crew into the area when its not grey

There SHOULD be some open boxes to put some crewmen there. Anyway, on the Tambor class sub, you can choose what side your deck gun goes on. Not sure about other subs.

Exactly. But there are no open slots. It works fine in the training mission and it worked fine before I changed the gun. On the Porpoise-clasee you can also install the deck gun on either seide of the conning tower.

I now have the same issue on my Gato class.
I upgraded to a bow mounted gun, and now I can't assign any crew to it. When I get back to port I will see if it can be removed and hopefully that will solve the problem.
Anybody have a work around for this yet?

I haven't found a workaround for this yet, going back to the old deck gun configuration didn't help either. I encountered this problem with another sub, too.

Let's hope it gets fixed in 1.02...

Did you upgrade an aft gun to a bow gun?

I noticed you have both boxes on the crew mgmt screen. I think your sub config is now with both guns which is probaly against the code, thus it doesn't know how to man 2 guns.

I have 1 box for deck and one for aa. I haven't tried changing deck guns yet.

Do you need to drag the current gun off your sub then drag a new gun on?

Very strange. It looks like once loaded the game does not recognize you put a cannon on the deck at all thus did not provide slots for men to be out there. Go back the autosave in port and attempt to reconfigure you sub again. See what happens.

I had the same happen to me in a Tambor class sub. Mine got damaged on patrol and after that, even on subsuquent patrols, I never had the option to man the deck guns but I could manualy use it fine.

I have the exact same issue.

Ive tried removing the guns, replacing the guns, moving crew over the empty spots but all I accomplished was losing some of my hard earned renown. :shifty:

Happened to me and in my case, it had something to do with docking and not finishing the mission. Renown taken from me and left me with no deck gun crew. I could use the gun, but could not assign any crew.

I think I can fix this When I got the two deckgun thing working
(in dec 6 1941) I learned quite a bit studying up to do it.
I will have to have a look and see if it is an issue with the
upc or if you guys are somehow just putting an aft gun
fwd ill get back to you but there is a fix im confident of that.

I'm having the same issue. On my previous patrol I was able to assign crew to the deck gun. The patrol was sucessful and I got a medal and several crew were able to be promoted. I started the new patrol and I have no slots to assign crew to the deck gun. :doh: I can use it manually tho. :)

Let me ask this...did you remove the old gun from the stern before installing the new one on the bow?
If not the game gets confused and thinks your trying to have 2 guns installed both stern and bow, according to your screen shot this would seem to be the case.
A Porpoise class sub can't have 2 deck guns installed.
According to the upgrades.upc only 5.25's can be mounted at the same time and only after 01-45

Adding entries to the upc file to allow double deck guns would be easy (although not realistic)

Anyway something to think about :D

*edit* well my idea was wrong, at least in part, old guns aren't uninstalled we simply drag the new one over the old...
