Can anyone explain how the assignment of a damage repair team works in SH4? I get that you drag and drop crew members into the damage control area, but how do they know what to work on and what to prioritize first?

In the damage screen, if an item(s) is red, you can drag it to the box in the bottom middle of the screen (it's usually empty and so far it appears the game will put things there automgically anyway).
Once it's there, you need some guys in the damage control group and make sure you're not in silent running. They'll fix the list in the order it is there and you can adjust the order if you want. The little bar (red) on the right side of the item shows how damaged it is - more red = more damaged. If you hover your pointer on the bar a number appears - it seems this number is between 0 and 1 where a higher value is more damage.
You can toggle the damage team of and on using one of the crew control buttons too...
According to the manual, guys at their stations will make repairs automatically - the damage team is additional help I suppose.
Also, look out for the guys fixing things in control room - let's you know someone is doing something.

Thanks. :D
How long deos it seem to take to fix a damaged system? is it still the 1 minute it used to take in Sh3 or has this been improved?

A bar indicates how badly a system is damaged. Depending on what the damage is, it can take extremely long. The big plus: If a system is damaged, it is damaged. I had a problem with the engines and was dead in the water, a leak dragged me down and I couldn't do a thing against it - either repair the engines to maintain depth and lose the section or repair the flooding and hope to survive.
On the downside, I survived that incident, because I let that section run full of water, then sent my team in the flooded section and they repaired the engines holding their breath. :rotfl:
Lol, Ah well, It's still an improvement I guess. In Sh3 you got the feeling that if the crew got shipwrecked they could knock together a new boat out of coconut husks and dead fish in a couple of hours, so gifted they were at fixing things.

I did have the flak guns damage themselves randomly (I think this is actually a feature, if I read the manual right) and went to repair them. Put some people in the DC slot, put the AA guns in the repair box, turned the repair guys on, but it said 2 minutes till repair all the way home.
Wasn't a big deal given that the damage was light and the guns still worked, but not sure what is going on or what I'm doing wrong. :hmm:
Still getting the hang of all the new and different stuff.

I had mine damaged by a bomb, along with my deck gun. Did exactly the same, said 15minutes to repair (damage was at 5%) and 20minutes for the Deck gun to repair.
about 72hours later, the AA gun was done (long after I removed the DC crew) and the Deck gun was still busted :hmm:
I got also damage on the deckgun and did several attempts to fix it ,still no joy.

Well in that last mission I eventually went back to port with it still damaged. No biggy.
But now I've got a real problem!
200 or so miles south of Tokyo, I was ambushed by 2 aircraft. Bombs hit as I was diving. I was able to down one of the aircraft on the way down, but then I was on the way down. Flooding was critical (or so they told me, I have no idea where the flooding stuff is) and my engineroom was damaged, both types.
I was sinking so I had no real choice but to blow ballast. I was lucky. The second plane didn't come back. I had the repair guys repair the bulkhead and the engines. Now all that's left is the flak gun and the deck gun (those things never want to repair). According to the damage station, the engines are repaired, yet they aren't starting. Some of my crew are yellowed out, but under their health they say like 93 or 95 percent.
In effect, I don't know why I'm not moving. To make matters worse, it seems the back of the sub is slowly settling in the downward position, and I don't know why I'm flooding or how to fix it.
So I guess my question is...
1. How do I get the engines going again?
2. How do I stop the flooding? How do I even tell that I'm flooding other than their reports?
