View Full Version : Why no ATI cards for SH4?
First off I am new here and still have a lot to learn. I don't see anyone running ATI cards with SH3/SH4. Is there an issue with these cards? My current system in an Intel quad core 2.66, Bad Axe 2 MB, 2 Gigs DDR2, and an Nvidia 6600 video card (left over from my previous 3.6 gig system). My current system runs SH3 OK with some lagging when looking through the periscope in the middle of large convoys.  I want to upgrade my video card before getting SH4 and was looking at the ATI 1950 series cards. If this a mistake and I should stay with the nvidia family for this game please let me know. The main reason I was going to go with the ATI card is that Corssfire looks to be bore flexible than SLI with respect to which products you link. I would like to get a second 1950 card in a few months as prices drop and link them. I an trying to keep my video card purchase price right around 200.00. What will be the best fit for my requirements.
Thx
Ron

Works like a treat on my X850XT...
When I leave Law School to go home in April, I will be running it on my ATI Radeon 9600, which is actually the worst ATI card supported by the game. It should be alright on lower settings, at least.
For now, I am stuck with my laptop, which only has an Intel 945G. It runs SHIII, despite the fact that it is not supported by that game, but it will not run SHIV at all (although I can load up the game, the actual gameplay itself won't work - just the menu screens and cinematics).

Silent Hunter IV does not properly support ATI cards with overdrive. You are stuck at underclocked speeds when playing this game. This means all cards in the X18xx and X19xx series.

I'm running with ATI x700 pro 256 and with all options maxed, it runs great. Mouse is a little slow in periscope screens, but not bad.

been running a 9800pro 3 years+ , works for me still. might have to update before too long, but it has been a great card, even if it is getting old.

Sh3 (haven't installed Sh4 until FSAA is fixed), but it runs/ran fine on cards I've had:
- Radeon X1600XT
- Radeon X1800GTO
- Radeon X1950 Pro - 256mb
- Radeon X1950 Pro - 512mb
No issues at all.

ATI x1300 w/512mb.... runs
Runs fine on my 1900 XTX.
X800XT platinum edition, P4 3.2, 2gigs ram.
Initially I had trouble but i found out it was because I changed a bunch of gfx settings and didn't restart the game. Works great now :)
I bought this card ~ 2years ago and it still plays most games at 16x12 with max details. It's been a good investment.

Hilarious that the game does not support dual core CPU's, Vista 64 instructions, CPU's..DX 10 or Geforce 8800's.

As for Dual-Core...mine seems to handle it just fine.
Vista 64: Why? Are you running with more than 4Gigs of memory? If not, what is it that you think that 64-bit is going to net you? Keep in mind that, in many ways, this is an add-on more than it is an entirely new product. It's still using (primarily) the SH3 engine.
DX10 support might happen down the line, but that would likely require significant programming to accomplish. It's not simply a matter of dropping in a new file or two.

gforce 8800 is the only card that will run DX10+
Why spend $200 on an outmoded card when for $75 more you can get a state of the art card?
The nVidiaGeforce 8800GTS with 320 Mb memory can be had for about $260.
This card is not listed as supported, but check the post and see if people who have this card can play the game.
This card rocks
