View Full Version : what the hell are these invisible 3d monoliths fraking up my fps?
every once in a while ill run into these damn invisible monoliths. They will appear wherever - off in the distance as a small darkened transparent square, right next to my sub as a big rectangle, or 100 feet below the ocean.
And whenever I look at one, it takes my fps from 60 to three.

I've seen similar in a few games I have no idea.

Can you try firing some torps at them to see if anything happens?

Perhaps it is one of these?

I think it has something to do with some debug thingy...i got a tip from another thread somewhere in here about some settings in the main.cfg file.
Change these from Yes to No:
[DEVELOPING]
DevDebugEnable=Yes
DevEditEnable=Yes
MiniDump=Yes
Oh, it's the main.cfg in Documents/SH4 folder.
This might fix it.

I haven't seen those yet. Do you get reports from the crew that they've been spotted when they are around?

Same here.
x1950XTX on XP.
First school mission (Nav). When you first come into the game go on deck and look at the 2 merchants coming at you off your port bow. I think there's one in that general erection 'cuz my frames tank.

Yeah, that's the first place I noticed this too. When I looked at the two merchants off the port side, it brought my fps to its knees.
No doubt Ubi will make short work of this bug.

well no soap on that ...still the same ....needs to be addressed in 1.2
I've seen these things too. They look like clipping frames. Game almost comes to a halt when they appear. They move pretty fast from what I've seen. More like the speed of an aircraft than a ship. When they are gone, all returns to normal.
For the record, I have a legal download of the game.

As far as the debug thing, I had these set to "No" when I saw my first monolith...

So THAT's what it was, while my frames didn't dip to zero, they did drop quite a bit during that first school mission when looking to port. Doesn't seem to be a big problem, it shouldn't be too long before a fix comes.

Well it is a submarine sim :rotfl:
I too had noticed a drop down to 2-3 fps last night during training but i hadn't noticed the 'window' floating out there. I'll have to test that again and see if I spot anything.

Anyone using an *ahem* non-standard .exe?
Per the dev's post, we know the game DOES use a 'FADE'-like protection scheme (confirmed responsible for the '2d crewman' and 'random numbers called out'). Seems this could well fall into that umbrella of 'minor annoying things that break'.

I think UBI stated somewhere that the protection software was affecting some legitimate copys as well. dont know what those people are supposed to do though. contact ubi support maybe??
I haven't noticed the clipping box since I replaced no in the cfg debugging, but time will tell if that's really the solution since the appearance of the box was random in my case. Played about 10 hours last night without seeing it.

I have these squares also, in the 1st training mission. And a transparent hat on the crewmember beside me, (not the whole body, just the hat).
I have the UBIstore download version,patched to 1.1
(31/2 hour download, well at least they also gave me the maps and charts, I just have to print them out):cry:

:doh: Very strange bug... looks like a ufo :rotfl:
it could be worse than the old sh3 system if it spreads in correct sh4 versions and destroy the game reputation as a buggy and unplayable.
Or the game engine have serious graphical glitches that cause several slowdowns in a lot of situations or always.

Yes I havnt seen one but I get a complete drop in frame rate if I so much as look at my sub from side on, from bow or stern no problems but side on and down it goes, I wonder if I have one of your monolith thingies behind my sub.
As an aside maybe we should worship it like the monkeys did in the film 2001
