View Full Version : SH4 developed by the German government?

Hi all, I come to believe SH4 was developed by the German government. Whenever they pass new laws you can count on it they will be confusing and unnecessesarily over-complex and finally taken back and "patched". In the end things get worse and are more expensive

Now hereīs a small (incomplete) list of things in SH4 I just donīt understand:

- unreadable in-game dials (especially on the bridge or is it my graphic board?): is it really more work to make readable dials than making unreadable ones?

- fixed position in otherwise useless control room: from where you are placed you cannot even read the main depth gauge!

- confusing crew managment - in SH3 at least some of the symbols are self-evident. In SH4 they are all changed, but are they better? All those symbols and figures are rather confusing to me. On the other hand I donīt even know how many people are aboard my sub unless I count them...

- the "damage screen" - LOL, this is meant to be a joke, isnīt it? A screen with dozens of unreadable icons spread all over the place. Looks a bit like my desktop which has too many short-cuts on it.

What the hell is this supposed to mean? Thereīs a scroll bar that "hides" important information - you forget to scroll you miss some damage report or what?
No sub-interior on the damage screen! AoD had one, SH1 had one (a fine one, too!), SH2 had one, SH3 had one (also nice), SH4... has little icons and a useless picture of my sub (or did I miss something???)

- the menu bar and text field - the text field is way too big. No matter where you place it, it kills immersion and blocks your view. On the other hand you need it urgently because some men donīt talk to you, e.g. when you ask for sonar contacts or depth under keel.

- ...and why is it that my watch officer doesnīt report any contacts unless I bump into them? Why is it I canīt ask him what he sees???

And why is it anyway that there are so many things that were way better in vanilla SH3 and turned worse in SH4? Isnīt a new product meant to IMPROVE average things and OPTIMIZE good ones??? Probably the DevTeam was so focused on improving the graphics that they forgot to actually PLAY SH4.

Donīt get me wrong, Iīm still happy that SH$ is there in the first place, and yes there are some nice improvments and the graphics are fine, but it really annoys me that many good aspects that were even in AoD or SH1 were replaced by silly features.

Cheers, AS

Although I agree the game has some issues, I can't for the life of me understand why people give the damage control screen such a hard time. I find it to be quite intutive and easy to use. But that's just me I guess. :)

Quote quote quote......SH1 it's still competitive versus SH4
and AoD even more.
Much more sim
Much more playable
Much more enjoyabile
Much more immersive

And SH2/DC insuperated still challegin

And grafically in many points superior
