Reading back over this, I appear to have asked a question, then asked a rhetorical question and then descended into a grumble (for which i appologise but will not change... I'm not going to have wasted the effort of a 30 minute late night post), and finally ending on a request... Feel free to respond to any of it :D
Anyone know if the submarines in the museum can be surfaced? I'd very much like to see the submarine on the surface rather than obscured by poor lighting condition underwater.
I know that you can maneuver the camera around and in and out around the submarine.
In SH3 (being a novice to submarine sims) I was curious to see the difference between the different classes of submarines and each of their variants. The 2D image of each of the different subs (although not very pretty) gave me the profile of what i wanted to see.
In SH4, The majority of the subs look all the same to me. Their differences appear to be somwhat limited. It makes it very hard to tell the differences between them with the new museum view. Added to this is the lack of information regarding each of the museum articles (sizes, max depth, range and profile) in the recognition manual.
For example (at least going on exteriors and interior layout) I cannot see any justification for a new class name of sub between Salmon, Sargo and Tambor. Minus a few areas which have minor change (like the mast and rear of ship) the Salmon, Sargo and Tambor might aswell BE the same ship. It seems rather saddening to have so little variation in the American naval fleet. Compared to the leap forward in technology provided in the German navy for submarines, the Americans (at least to a newcomer like me) just seemed to flail.
The in-game museum is often my first port of call for any sim to find out the capabilities of the in-game technologies. SH4 currently lacks any information regarding the pretty objects on display in it's "museum" and as such is not (IMHO) a museum but rather an art gallery (which IMHO again is very very very dull).
Someone PLEASE invigorate my interest in these pacific subs. I'm sure there is lots of fascinating facts about them and their use... It is just that after SH3 GWX, i'm currently less than captivated by the image of WW2 pacific submarine combat. It seems less intense, the subs and their weapons... less impressive in their function.
Links, comments, stories, even false promises of a changed design in the museum layout will be welcome. Make this our NEW museum :D
Cheers very muchly
