View Full Version : Thinking of upgrading to GeForce 7600GS for SHIV

Just wondering if anyone here has it and can tell me whether it is worth upgrading to this card FOR SHIV SPECIFICALLY.

I think I've decided to cave in and upgrade my video card, from my 128mb BFG GeForce 6800OC. A 512 BFG GeForce 7600GS (AGP version) sells for 180 Canadian here.

I was wondering if that sounds like a reasonable investment, and if it's worth it for SHIV. I love BFGs nVidia cards, but I'm open to other good options if anyone has any to offer!

Honestly, 7600GS from a 6800 isn't worth the effort. I'd invest in a newer system if you can. Think core 2 duo and atleast a 7950.

Right, this was my original plan, unfortunately my finances for the next year aren't looking good enough for a new system.

Also, I don't quite mind since the GeForce 6800 would make a great birthday present to my brother who still has an old Radeon 9800. :p

But is it really not that far a step up?

Just wondering. The memory amount difference at least looks quite striking, but that's why I'm asking - don't know how it'd translate into framerate, and what it'd look like with SHIV.

I'm also not really planning to play anything newer than SHIV (except possibly the simultaneously-released STALKER) in the foreseeable future.

[edit]

Oh, and my system otherwise is a 3.06GHz P4 with 2 gigs of the older vanilla DDR.
SHIV at moderate to mid-high settings runs no more than 20fps average on the current card.

I'm currently playing with a 7600GS and although the game's playable I wouldn't recommend buying this card especially for SH 4. I had to turn off the environmental effects and turn down a few other settings a bit and now get between 15 FPS (in port) to 30 FPS (at sea), ~40 inside the sub.

EDIT: with an AMD2600+, 1 Gig RAM

tbh..if your gunna upgrade..go for a 7800 or 7900 series

the 7600 isn't worth it..especially when you have a 6800OC version now

have you checked newegg for there price's?

newegg..has the 7800gs from EVGA for 194.00 bucks..plus a 20 dollar rebate

Okay, thanks for the note! This is very handy.

I'm going to start thinking more towards a 7800 then, though that one has the potential to set me back a bit more. I'm cautious of buying hardware online, however - I've had a bad history with it.

Yes, looking at it though - it's a bit outside my price range here.

The best I can do price-wise now is a 7800 I would say.

I have two computers. One with Pentium 4 2.4ghz, 1024MB RAM with a 256MB 6800GT AGP and a newer computer with a Athlon 64 X2 3800+, 2048MB RAM and 512MB 7600GS PCI-E. The 7600GS is a bootleneck in my newer computer and I wish I could swap graphics cards as the 6800GT performs better. So I suggest saving up for a 7800GS as the 7600GS series are just pants.

Can you get a 7900GS in AGP? I thought the maximum was 7800GS under AGP limitaions.

Okay folks, you convinced me.

I'll cough up for the 7800. I wouldn't normally but the fact that I can use my 6800 as a gift for my brother makes it two birds with one stone. :p

I just want to be set well for SHIV. High-detail or not, as with SHIII - it's my benchmark game and my daily gaming bread so to speak. The 6800 served me well for two and a half years and all through SHIII, but I think SHIV needs a little better.

The reason you want the 7800 is DDr3 ram, much faster than the DDR2 in the 7600GS. (And better clock speed, etc, too)

CCIP, I have the 7600GS OC and I wont be to upgrade until I find a job. Of course, I cant tell you otherwise since I still dont have the game, which irks the hell out of me. It runs SH3 just fine. What do they know, they are not PC technians like I am. It also depends upon syst RAM and CPU. The choice is yours.

i've ordered from newegg..soooo many times..that the last time i checked my order history there..it was reaching 8 pages

i have never..ever had a single problem with newegg..there customer service is by the best i have encountered..and the two times i had to RMA something..both times..they gave me a brand new item right away....one was a MOBO..that was 11 months old..the other was a HD that was 5 months old..they usually warranty there items for 1 year unless otherwise stated..plus the manufacter's warranty of course

i've ordered every kind of item from there..it's where i get just about all of my computer parts for me..and my friends..unless its a absolute emergency of course

you will have no problems from there CCIP

umm just being curious..but how do you know that none of us are computer tech's or have built systems for well over 10-15 years?

wait until april.

the 8600GTS will be hitting the shelves, with full dx10 support. yet slower then the 320mb 8800GTS.

i recommned getting the 320mb, or the 640mb GTS if you can afford one

the GTX is to expensive

CoolHand, all I am saying is that one, I know how computers work inside and out.

I assume nothing and no offence to anyone. I am highly qualified to make suggestions on what to get. Now I must confess as of yet, I know nothing about PCI-x, until I upgrade again. I most humbly apologize to you.

There is some rumors going around the Nvidia is going to release a 8xxx series card in AGP.

Even if you can't affort it, it will drive the price of the other cards down a little.

Well it doesnt look like I will be able to let you know how the 7600GS card works this weekend...

I installed the new card and it no longer runs the game at all...the intro video doesnt even play it just gets a black screen, an active movie window in the background seems to be there, and eventually it says cant initilize 3d...

This is on Sh4 and Sh3...so it looks like I may have gotten a dodgy graphics card.

Im using the latest drivers from Nvidia, and the ones on the cd dont work either.

putting my old card 5700 back in there and the intro and game runs but its too slow to play the game itself.

If anyone knows of other settings or software that is needed to make it work, please post it as the OP may need the info aswell when he gets his card.
(it might be related to it being an older machine or somthing)

IM agp 8x capable...and seem to meet all the requirements.

also windows media player doesnt seem to be working at all, I will reinstall that stuff and the game to see if that helps

Sorry for the double post, the edit button is prompting to delete the message only. :/

OK, I fudged it by deleting the intro videos, now it works and I can play...

7800gs 512, p4 2.8ht 800fsb, 2 gig of ram

Its interesting the sliders and most of the graphics options have very little effect on the framerate, low settings, high settings, the sliders its all the same...except the enviro effects which cause a 5fps drop or so.

leaving pearl, I get about 15fps on the bridge, its faster in the sub. adjusting settings made no difference.
Im guessing im cpu bound...

In the open ocean i get about 18-22 and it feels quite playable for me, In not a fps junkie. Im happy with the card. American TV is 24 fps...so its resonable.

Ram wize I checked the PEAK useage... it was about 1.4gb, so you want at least 1.5gb ram..preferably 2gb...at one gig you will get some paging which will slow things down a little due to hdd access...

I will reinstall windows tomorrow to see if I can fix the media player errors and then I should be good to go.

Oh an Im running a 450w psu and its all good so far...
Im only running 1024x768 70hz...I might try some higher rez options later and will edit this post. Sometimes I have found performance increasdes by running a higher rez with some games, I know that sounds wierd...I doubt this will be the case with SH4 tho.
