What purpose does the Submarine School in the game serve, other than to familiarize yourself with the game? Does it earn you any extra renown like in SH-3? Also... does anyone know how you get a new boat in career mode... do you have to "upgrade" like in SH3 whenever you're ready... or do they "offer" it to you ala SH 1?? Thanks for the help!

I guess you get renown. I did all but the convoy attack and started with 1000 renown.

I haven't noticed.

Although it's good manual torperdo practice on that one cruiser moving across your bow.

Yes. But the answer is not the one you want :)

The automagic aid to get speed from the stopwatch is broken.

The main purpose seemed to me to be an option to become familiar with the sims interface before launching a career if you want.

I don't believe you get extra points like in SH3. In fact, I think I saw in the OPTIONS menu a multiple selection of Renown levels that you can choose to start your Career off with.

You get 100 renown for doing the school. Applies to all profiles, so you dont
need to do it again if you change your player profile.

In SH3 the Naval Academy portion you could tell by looking at the main screen what missions you had completed, and which ones you hadn't.
Does SH4's Sub School have a similar functionality?

Dont' know, but I just choose 5000 renown for myself when I started my career...bought upgrades and filled my crew with it.

I guess this means you had the right connections in the Navy? :)

Getting 5000 renwon at the beginning of the career means you're a son of an admiral, getting 100 renown at the beginning means you've slept with the daughter of an admiral.:p:rotfl:

Or maybe a player gets only 100 renown because they were not very good?

Is there any indication that you completed them? I did two last night and it doesn't seem to acknowledge that they were done anywhere. Do I have to create a career profile first?

Or do it the hard way via the planning map and a ruler.

Have you tried clicking the stem at the very top of the watch? That's how you get it to track elapsed time (which you can then use with the "3-minute rule" or other such method to determine speed from plotted ponits on your nav map). I've seen some other posts where folks were trying to just click anywhere on the watch like you did with SH3, but you have to click on the stem at the very top to start/stop this SH4 watch working (which makes more sense when you think about it, but I'm not sure if it's actually documented that way anywhere).

Good luck!
