So im just out driving my U-boat around on the surface and the watch crew spots a destroyer dead ahead about 5,000 meters at around sunset.
I follow him for a little while just to see what he will do (still surfaced) and he doesnt seem to be noticing me.
the sun is setting deep now and it is almost dark. i have closed to within 3800 meters of this guy and he is still just running ahead slow without any idea that im there.
i chuckle - "im going to have a bit of fun with this destroyer"
I man the deck gun, carfully range the target through the UZO three times to make sure
I open fire on him and the first shot is a direct hit massive explosion. i quickly order a crash dive.... the alarm bell rings, men are frantic trying to get to their diving stations, i go to the periscope view and raise the scope to watch what the destroyer does.
Suddenly everything around me lights up brightly and i can clearly see at least 6 shells flying rapidly in my direction.
It is at this point that i notice
IM STILL ON THE SURFACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the friggin sabotage/ malfunction feature of SH3 commander rendered my flank speed inoperative and im sitting at zero knots on the surface facing down a destroyer.
"AHEAD FULL" the diesels spool up and suddenly ALL SIX SHELLS that guy fired found their mark right dead center on my U-boat. Heavy flooding in the bow torpedo compartments, bow crew compartment, sonar/radio room, the sonar and radio operators are now dead, the command room is damaged and my diesels are knocked out!!
back to the periscope, 6 more shells coming at me - all hits! NOOOOOOO all hands lost!
glad i was playing around with a meaningless career that i dont really keep up with

Sounds like quite the experience, good idea to do a few tests before getting to far into a patrol. Speed test, which you found out the hard way:o, another is a crash dive to make sure the boat does not go into a crash dive without leveling off.
*shaking head* That serves you right - "having a bit of fun" by attacking a Destroyer with the deck gun!
Doenitz and the families of the 40something dead will not be pleased! :D

Yeah, call me a girl's blouse but I'd have let the DD go on his merry way unmolested by my pea-shooter. Now if he'd been escorting something juicy things might be different...
As for surface issues, I learnt about the GWX bouyancy feature the hard way. I thought I was sneaking around Loch Ewe at periscope depth. In reality I was sticking my conning tower several meters out of the water for all to see as I was only at 2 kts and a set depth of 12m. I now pay very close attention to set depth and actual depth.

I'm actually a bit peeved about this "feature". I understand that at slow speed there was positive buoyancy and one had to compensate, but it's not like the capitan had to order "depth 19m" to get a depth of 15m, the helmsman should have taken care of this...

It is a bit trying at times but I thought I'd just go with it. I think there's a 'fix' or rather a 'bouyancy-turner-offer' somewhere isn't there?

Hope you sunk in shallow enough water for me to dive you're wreck.
Great fun to mess with them, if you get in a lucky shot sometimes they disengage and give you enough time to escape; course, you've got to get under the water to have any chance of getting away.
I got luck once (ONCE) with an injured small escort, I’ve got no torps, and I'm damaged enough from his endless DCing that I can't maintain level so I have to surface or sink to the crushing depths, but he’s up there waiting.
So I squeeze every last volt out of what’s left of my batteries to swing around to face the orbiting menace (who's burning badly already from a self depth charge (hehe)). I blow balas and man the deck guns as-soon-as we crest the waves shooting a blind shot straight into her. I must have hit something expensive as that bad boy lit up like my grandfathers birthday cake! She went dark and quiet and shortly after slipped into the dark deep and I limped home unmolested.
Ichi…
Playing with destroyers on the surface . . . tsk, tsk, tsk :nope: :nope: To be allowed into hell, you'll need to write 500 times, I will not . . . :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: oh dear, i also use the sabotage and malfunction thingy as soon as im in deep enough water i test everything especially the crash dive

hahaha i thought it was quite funny really.
as i said it was a career that i was just playing around with and not taking seriously i mean the kaleuns name was "Will Fhart" for gods sake hahaha.
i figured i could get one hit in and crash dive before he could come about as i was almost directly astern of him, but because flank speed messed up and i did not immediately realise it this was not the case.
Im just glad it wasnt the career i take seriously- as i would NEVER attempt this in that career.

:)
As a Noob :yep:
6 completed patrols (GWX)
On surface (English Channel)
I receive radio message of convoy heading in my direction :|\\
At same time my watch spot destroyer at 140 degrees
Dive ! !
Sonar reports "Warship 150 and closing long range"
I'm never going to outrun/lose this thing in 25m depth
Aft torpedo.......hits her towards rear of hull :p
She breaks off attack run......disengages alltogether......awash up to rear gun turret in a couple of minutes..........still moving slowly away from me
I check periscope/sonar.......4000m+ from badly damaged Destroyer
Think to meself
Lost a few mins there........flank speed on surface (First real convoy attack :know: )
check ........Destroyer now has rear turret barrels on water surface
Surface......
I check victim through binoculars......Flashes :hmm:
See the shells screaming towards me.......Rear hull damage......
DIVE......Too late....2 more shells impact....No propulsion.......2 more shells
BLACK....Abandon mission :damn: :damn: :damn:
LOL

Boy - seems like bad luck. I get shot at a lot and they rarely hit me. I'm surprised he landed one at 4000m. Often after I hit a convoy I'll surface to finish a wounded merchant and an escort will come screaming back to engage me. I'll wait till the rounds start landing near me before I dive and escape. I find it's rare to take a hit when you're facing away from them (narrow profile). Every now and again I take a hit, but even then, I've never had any serious damage from it - hull damage maybe. But never damage to systems. Come to think of it, I've never had my deisels knocked out. Kinda sad really - I always seem to die outright, or take no damage at all. I never get those close calls, or hairy damage situations.

i think GWX simulates radar ranging after like 1943?
so it is possible that early in the war several shots will miss before you start getting peppered.
late in the war however i have noticed that destroyer shots are almost always spot on first shell out of the berrel.

What's after like 1943 ?:D never got into beginning of 43 yet...
While checking out GWX with an old Vavilla career that reached mid 43, discovered GWX escorts were deadly on the surface. Since then I don't mess around the surface except when I'm sure a lonely merchie is not armed.

What the hell is a 1943? I thought the world stopped spinning when it reached March 1940?:D
