I couldnt wait today to get in-game, the first thing I did was run the Midway single mission with all options on.

Game runs fine, but i felt like i needed glasses. I can understand the glare, but its like there is a blur filter on and I found it very hard to look at.

Has anyone else experienced this or do i really need glasses?

Yes. Quite blurry.

The blurry factor is likely because the 3D is locked at 1024x and stretched to higher resolutions.

Dev team said they're working on it.

Some of the graphics features I have turned off for a better picture. Try turning off some. Water glare is kind of harsh to me.

post processing filters give it a grainy look

I know this kind of goes against the grain, but I have everything turned on, love the new graphics. We are all used to the cleaner look of SH3, I like this new look. It will only get better with fixes, mods.

I like the PPF look. It grows on you after a while.

I'm noticing the same thing. I used to play with it off, now its on all the time.

I think they based everything on PPF as far as the graphics. I really like them. I do however need a break every hour or so as my eyes get strained. That is ok though....I have to say HI every once in a while to my wife and kids.

when i first loaded SH4 the blur effect which was enabled by the post processing filter was driving me crazy, took me a few hours to find it and turn it off, had to search the forums for similar complaints about the graphics being so grainy, it's hillarious i think these are just a bunch of the devs jokes on the simmers  just like the seabed Gulliver size boulders and sea plants to remind us of the old ww2 sub movies...

I can't be sure on this, but it really seems like using the binoculars or periscope doesn't actually increase the resolution of whatever you're looking at. It's as if zooming in on something just scales up the image instead of redrawing it. I usually run things in 1024x768 on my rather outdated computer, and the resolution I'm seeing is a lot worse than 1024x768.

That seems completely asinine, so I really don't believe that's what's going on. It might be one of the shaders that's not scaling properly. If it is, though, it's not one that can be turned off.

Whatever's going on, I can't see crap through my binoculars. It's really put me off the sim until (hopefully) it can be fixed.

I love the look of the game. The effects are deliberate and done with artistic merit, IMHO. Of course I don't have eye problems or a monsterous monitor so I could be biased. :smug:

I have no issue with the binocs. Things look as they should on my rig. You said your computer is old. What do you have?

As stated, the post-processing filters give it that grainy, old look. I had to turn off Environmental Effects; aside from the volumetric fog it caused the deck crew to be translucent.

I shut off the EE as fog was a FPS killer for me. Maybe new patch will correct the fog and the ghost crew:yep:

I hope so. My FPS isn't too bad except when I encounter the, dum-dum-dum, MONOLITH, aieee! But the ghost crew is really annoying and it definitely effects me too.

The problem with shutting off EE is that it also disables the translucent water. I absolutely love the water effects in this game so I can't disable EE - thus I have to live with the frame halving fog

Hopefully they will separate the volumetric fog from the rest of the EE stuff - that would be superb.

I just cannot stand the post processing look. Inside the sub the sub floor looks like you are looking at it through a screen door.

I turned it off and also turned off full screen glare and it looks ok for now.

If they fix fsaa I'll be happy. If they give us 3d high resolutions I'll be REALLY happy.
:p

Agreed about EE. I've left it on for now, but when we get our blessed AA and higher rez, there will be an inevitable performance drop and that wretched fog of fps death will have to be straightened out.

I've got everything else dialed on a 7950GT / Athlon 3800 dual Core and get 75-80fps on the bridge. With a little bit of fog, it is halved.

The shader / effect files are stored in text format, tonight I'm going to have a peek, see what can be pared down.

See here, it looks like Mud figured out a way to kill the fog and leave everything else intact:
