View Full Version : Imperial or Metric?

Guys I am VERY worried about this. I searched the board and found no definitive answer either direction. Sure the AA thing bothered me a little but I told myself that this game is a SIMULATION and at 100% realism I'd be spending most of my time inside anyway. If the measurements are in Metric and not Imperial though I will be very disappointed. For a SIMULATION to have such a glaring innacuracy is unforgiveable in my opinion. I'll still buy the game (I spent $150 on the Deluxe) and I will still enjoy the game a lot I'm sure.

Am I making a big deal out of nothing? Is this a big deal to others as well?

I've been ranting about this for weeks since in every preview screenie I saw it was always in Meters.

From what I have read from people who have the game, it is only running in Meters...Then there is talk that a patch may fix it for Imperial Measurements..Lets Hope!

It's in meters from what I have read. This needs to be changed to Imperial measurements. That's non-negotiable.

No! Nooooooo! I don't beleive it! I WON'T beleive it. There has to be a setting somewhere, or a config file to me modified. I cannot beleive that such a fundmental(in my opinion anyway) detail would have been overlooked or cut for times sake.

Even to this day the USA uses the Imperial system...why would they stick the metric system on us in an otherwise realistic sim...hmm

I agree. The Ubigods would not forsake us so. I remember seeing a screen that had a depth gauge that went to 450. There MUST be an option somewhere.

SH4 does indeed use the Metric system.

Maybe the USA version will be Imperial...

Talk about realism!! oh well

Got a feeling it will have to be patched. Even the readme says that somethings need to be patched. And I will have a problem if they don't.

Bwahahahahahah because UBI is an evil company that does not like the USA, Liberia, and Myanmar :rotfl:

But seriously, I do not know why they did this. I hope this is fixed in a patch.

I'm an American and I can use both. I'm actually use to the metric system from playing SH 3 and il2:p.

Yes we all can use both. That isn't the point though. This is a SIMULATION! Having the measurements in Metric with no way to change to Imperial is just as out of place as having the crew speak in German!!

Actually it appears to be worse than you think....

While the game is in metres in terms of the command display guage, the guage as displayed in 3D is seemingly showing feet.... So on one set of guages you see the depth in metres (and there's a shallow and deep just like SH3) but the 3D view guage mounted on the wall of the sub seems to be showing feet....

Already been discussed at the Ubi forum.

I don't know what to make of this. It's not a deal breaker for me, but it does raise a serious question in my mind- Why would they not implement both imperial and metric upon release? You cannot make me believe doing so would have tons of extra man-hours of work...and for something so basic to a U.S. submarine.

Beginning to think that SH4 will be like SH3- It will be where we want it in about 2 years...

Oh well, I enjoyed vanilla SH3, so on to the Pacific...

They were suppose to. I mean the only conclusion you can come to is that they had to rush it out the door. If that means dealing with it until the 1st patch, I can live with that.

Its not like we have a huge selection of WWII sub sims.

Ok, I will copy and paste again from the Ubi SHIV forum.. the Daily Dev Team Answer thread:

Q: Taifu_Noodle: What units of measurement will SH4 use?
A: Silent Hunter 3 used the same measurements system as the Kriegsmarine - based on the metric system. For Wolves of the Pacific, we will of course use the imperial system since this is the historical solution. However, we are considering to have the game switch to metric as an option.

--------------------------------------------------

So why are things being displayed in Metric/Meters(at least in most areas)? Because the game was released as UNFINISHED. Blatantly and knowingly... unfinished.

I would say Ubi is getting very brave in trying to find out har far they can go to get people's money. They are not only willing to release the game riddled with bugs that I'm sure they know about, they are making it very clear in no uncertain terms that they are releasing the game unfinished.

Either that or they are just breaking a promise to have the game units in the 'historical solution' of the Imperial system. Releasing a patch to deliver the promised goods would just go to show that the game was released.. unfinished, knowingly so(they knew it was unfinished).

This isn't the first time a Ubi-published game used meters for the USA. In Forgotten Battles / Pacific Fighters all of the altitude callouts and subtitles are in meters.

Well FB can be excused cause both the Germans and Soviets used metric, but for PF well....er at least the guages are standard. :88)

Agree this and the US Lanc are 2 of my WTF bugs making me wait til the first patch in any case.

Yeah I remember reading that myself, and the fact it's still there does not impress me.

I really wish I hadn't read that quote. I REALLY want this game to succeed, and I will buy it no matter what just to support the Devs and PRAY for some fix. I agree with your assessment that is this definitive proof that this game was release in an unfinished and very rough state. I am worried now that the reviews of the final product will be so brutal that the game will not sell as well as it should have and this will be the end of this wonderful series.

I know there are others here in this community going around trying to cheer everyone up and even going so far as calling us "ladies going through a rough time in their lives." But those people are all silent on this issue...at least on this thread anway. It's very disheartening to have something that Ubisoft stated would NATURALLY be ingame NOT be implemented in the release.

Hi Tranton,

Thanks for your reply and input. When it comes to this particular issue Ubi/SHIV Devs will probably fix it in a patch. But my main point and concern is just how far they pushing it to see what they can get away with. It seems clear to me that they are making it clear that we are not only supposed to expect buggy releases, but a product that isn't even finished yet.

How good of reviews and and sales should an unfinished product pushed out the door get/deserve? I for one am not buying it. Perhaps, maybe, after it has had numerous patches.

I've been hanging around to see if they are going to say and/or do anything about the phoney higher resolutions that come from 'upscaling from 1024x768'(at least say something). But man, during that time I'm starting to see reports all kinds of bugs making me think the game is absolutely riddled with them, fueling my disappointment and anger and making me think I may never have a desire for it. A few days ago I was REALLY looking forward to driving a U.S. Sub in the Pacific.

I guess my standards are just too high and I should just accept a half-baked, bug ridden, decpetive high resolution practices game since there is no competition. I suppose Silent Hunter having no competition is a large part of why Ubi feels it can get away with releasing an unfinished game.
